Hanover Park is a small town in Carbon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale–Norfolk metropolitan area. The Hanover Park Golf Course (now defunct) was located here. The town was founded in 1849 by George Washington Polk and his brother James K. Polk as a stop on their railroad route from St. Louis to Springfield. They named it for the Duke of Hanover, who had been their patron during the American Revolutionary War. The first post office opened in 1852 and was called "Plymouth." In 1870, the town became part of Carbondale and remained so until 1975 when it became part of Norfolk County as a result of its incorporation into that county. The original courthouse building still stands today, which served as both the town's government center and court house until 1957 when Carbondale annexed it to itself and built its own courthouse which still stands today beside Interstate 70 east of Hanover Park on the old rail line site. According to the 2010 census, Hanover Park has a total area of , all land. As of the census 2000, there were 1,521 people living in 220 households out of which 41% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 47% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 49% were non-families. Tilden Jr., who had won the election that year with support from President Grover Cleveland's Republican opponent William McKinley's party line on civil rights issues. In 1920–21, while Trump was running for president as a candidate of the National Republican Party against Warren G Harding and Tom Dewey, Hanover Park residents voted him into office as their first Republican mayor ever; he later served four terms before being impeached on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in 1987). In 1959–60, due to its location within sight of Washington D.C.–owned L'Enfant Plaza – which had been renamed Independence Mall after George Washington – Hanover Park became one of few places in America where people could see or experience Ulysses S Grant's farewell Address from across Pennsylvania Avenue NW before it became an open-air mall.
