In 1951, Hanover Park became one of two communities in Illinois (the other being Orlandville) that were designated as part of the suburban growth area around Chicago metropolitan areas. Hanover Park was a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Hanover Park was David Horsfall in 1837. Other early settlers were John and Nancy Rankin who arrived in 1838 and erected the first house on the current site ofHanover Park on May 20, 1840. George Ladd purchased land from Horsfall in 1841 and founded the Ladd & Rankin mill which became one ofDuPage's largest commercial enterprises. In 1865, Samuel Prentice bought land adjacent to his father-in-law's farmstead for $5 per acre and began to build a home that would serve as the town's first courthouse. The courthouse cornerstone was laid on October 15, 1865 by Judge Augustus Burchfield. In 1871 when DuPage County became statechartered it included only those portions ofDuPage lying east of Watertown Heights following a local referendum held that year. This leftHanover Park without any government until 1915 when a new capitol building was built at Kedzie Avenue and Randolph Street with much of its infrastructure completed by 1920 including electric lights and streetcars within blocks of where it now stands including two football stadiums (one now used as an advertising center), three public baths (the world's second largest hot tub complex after Coney Island), four churches (four Congregationalist) and over seventy businesses including six banks, twelve grocery stores, thirteen automobile sales franchises and fifteen breweries; all but one are still operating today. In 1916 Abraham Lincoln traveled to Hanover Park to deliver remarks before a meeting of Du Page County Commissioners about proposed changes to county government which were then before the Illinois General Assembly for approval under His Excellency’s New Government Bill No 418 A Bill To Amend The Constitution Of Du Page County Chicago Tribune December 1 1916 p4
