In 1861, he donated land to build a school for his children on that property; this became Hanover Park Elementary School. The school was renamed after George Washington Carver Sr., one of its founders and one of America's leading educators and agriculturalists. In 1865, when Illinois became an American state, Congress gaveHanover Park township status; it would remain unchanged until 1959 when it change again to include parts of Chicago Heights along with all other townships within Cook County revised by statute into unincorporated areas subject only to local government jurisdiction under a system known as "territorial government". This conversion did not coincide with any realignment of village or town boundaries within Cook County which took place starting in 1915 merely due to differences in population size across those municipalities – although some vestiges of rural character still lingered throughout much of these new jurisdictions’ villages (e.g., use of open field names).

The name "Hanover Park" comes from George Washington's home town of Fairfax County, Virginia. Hanover Township was organized in 1834 and named for George Washington's father-in-law, James Hanover. The township seat was in Arlington Heights until1893 when it moved to neighboring Wheaton. In 1955, Arlington Heights merged with Hanover Park to form a larger municipality which still exists today as an enclave within Cook County on the southern edge of Evanston.
Hanover Park was founded in 1834 by John and Sarah Hanover. The first home of the Hanover Park Settlement, a group of Methodist Episcopal missionaries, was built on the site in 1835. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of 150 people. By 1847, the population had reached 300 people and the settlement became known as "The Village". In 1854, the village became an incorporated town.
