Hanover Park, Illinois is a town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 492 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Hanover Park was founded on November 10, 1847 by John Denton and his brother-in-law George Washington Maher as a small community on the banks of the Fox River. The name "Hanover" comes from George Washington's home state of Virginia and its then-new name for the capital city: Richmond. The village grew quickly due to its location near Chicago's main railroad yards and water supply systems. By 1860, Hanover Park had a post office, two churches, three schools, and around 100 housing units. 1/4 mile north of present day Main Street was another early settlement called Rocky Ford which may have originated with some land grants given to Capt. James Akins (the first white settler in what is now Hanover Park) by Ohio Governor Samuel Tilden in 1836 while he was serving as U.S. Minister to England under President Andrew Johnson%. Ford’s grant extended along both sides of East Lake Street between Third Avenue (now Dearborn Avenue) and South Side Road (now Pulaski Road). 2nd Ward Alderman Amos Humphrey served as recorder from 1859 until his death in 1865; he left behind an interesting legacy including being one of only three men ever elected to serve more than one term consecutively on Cook County Board Of Education (the others being George Waugh and Lorenzo Dowell). In 1870 Rockford incorporation added 1/4 mile east from current day Elmwood Avenue to become part of the Village of Hanover Park which eventually merged with neighboring Rockford on January 1st 1915 due to efforts by local officials including Alderman Humphrey who desired that all villages be annexed into their larger neighbor after years of debate within each municipality over whether or not it should be done based on growing municipal needs such as increasing populations (+500 residents since 1880), expanding education opportunities (+3 school districts since 1900), improving infrastructure (+5 miles+ roadbeds since 1914), etc.). Today there are over 12K people living in Hanover Park with over 3 Schools + 1500 extracurricular activites! On October 15th I attended my first open house for my new job! Hanover Park was a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was located on the northwest side of the Chicago metropolitan area and had a population of just over 5,000 people at the time of its incorporation in 1892. The village was named for King George III of Britain. Hanover Park was one of several villages that formed the Township of Hanover Park in 1847. The first post office opened in 1851, and as part of township reorganization following the American Civil War, Hanover Park's residents were apportioned to three townships: Northumberland Heights, South Side and West Side. In 1865, Northumberland Heights split off from Hanover Park to become one of the two new townships founded within Cook County. The village's only store closed down in 1958 and most residents self-sufficiently grew vegetables until 1987 when a gas station opened up and started importing processed foods. After years of decline,Hanover Park's economy turned around in the 2000s with frequent restaurant openings and development around an elementary school which has been home to many industries including engineering companies (now called Northwestern University), health careitals (HCA Healthcare) and now HVAC services ( mitochondria technology ).
