Hanover Park, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois in the United States. The population was 7,663 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Hanover Park comes from George Washington's estate in Upper Township on the north side of Hanover County, Pennsylvania. His grandson John Adams also had an estate there and named it after him. The first permanent settler in what became Hanover Park was Isaac Norris who came to what is now Hanover Park Township in 1834. He erected a log house on the site of his future home which he called "Norris' Grove." In 1839, John Prentice bought land adjacent to Norris' Grove and began developing it into a village known as Prenticeville. He named it after his friend and fellow British immigrant Jonathan Prentice who had arrived in America two years earlier as part of the Western Migration. By 1847, when Chicago became a city, all of Lake Michigan's villages were gone save for one—Prenticeville which continued until 1868 when it merged with other nearby townships to form Chicago Heights). In 1862, Abraham Lincoln moved from Springfield to this area and built himself a home here which served as his presidential mansion from 1865-1865 and again from 1889-1893 before being moved to White House Hill near West Side Highway (now Michigan Avenue) while he lived downtown. While living at East Potomac Street he donated land for parkland around present day Lake Shore Drive that forms much of South Side Neighborhoods 1 through 3 today; these areas were then annexed by Chicago in 1896 following incorporation by the City of Chicago. During World War II much activity took place here including munitions manufacturing by Walter Reed Army Institute Of Research; shipbuilding at Rock Island Arsenal; production at Henry Ford’s Dearborn Plant; and housing for workers on Navy Pier/Wabash River dockyards etc.. In 1945 plant operations ended but workers remain employed here through Ford Motor Company Health Plan until their retirement in 1957 followed by layoff during early 1960s due largely to changes brought about byurbanization etc.. Afterliberation many people returned here although some left because they found better opportunities elsewhere.. Today most residents are descendants or ancestors of those who first settled here over 150 years ago!

Hanover Park was incorporated as a village on March 22, 1892. On July 1, 1907, it became a town. The current name of Hanover Park comes from the aristocratic family that once lived there and donated land to the village for development purposes. The first settler in what would become Hanover Park was Isaac Newton Pratt who arrived in 1827 and built the first house on what is now State Street. He also gave away 2 acres (0.8 km²) of land to the village for use as parkland and schoolroom space. Other early settlers included John Haggerty (1829-1830), Levi Coffin (1831-1910), Israel Putnam (1832-1915), Amos Cutler (1835-1920), Asa Holton (1840-1900) and Augustus Kinney(1796-1868). The Village of Hanover Park was platted on October 14, 1892 by a group of six citizens led by George Witherspoon Kersey with assistance from John Prentice Woodward and others from Aurora Heights Township which had recently formed around that time. The plat included land off Washington Avenue between Dearborn Street and Michigan Avenue including what is now State Street; two blocks east of First National Bank building; one block south of Broadway Theatre; one block west of Jackson Boulevard; three blocks northwest of Lake Shore Drive; two blocks east of Cicero Road junction with Elmhurst Road; one block northwest of Blue Jay Road intersection with North Side Highway; an easement extending northwest from Cicero Road to Weicker Avenue granted to Mrs Kesselman for “the support and guidance”of her young son Julius Caesar Kesselman during his minority years while living in Aurora Heights Township…thus proving that any new township form must include representation through its womenfolk if it were to be successful In Accordance With The Constitution Of This Country….It Was Upon This Occasion That A Plan For The Organization Of A Village Was Drawn Up By Committee And Lettered E – Its Objections To Which No Answer WAS GIVEN And The Platted Town Of Hanover Park Incorporated On March 22nd 1892 By vote Of 6 Citizens Voted In Open Session At Our Masonic Hall After Which Time proceedings Were suspended pending Approval From Above…. While much has changed since then - especially within Chicago -Hanover Park's rich history can still be found throughout its streetscape including: Saint Clair Way which runs parallel to Dearborn St.; Potter Place where many homes were built beginning in the late 1800s until they were replaced by modern businesses starting in the 1960s/70s such as Sears Roebuck & Co.; West Side Drivefront where most residents continue to reside today before turning into Mass Ave.; Harrison avenue which runs along both sides of Harrison Blvd./north side thereof between Roosevelt Rd./south side thereof between Hazelwood Rd./east side thereof and West Side Dr./west side thereof thence northerly along Cook River until it reaches Ashland Quarry Rd., home to many farmers during this time period due mostly to lack elsewhere on their property having access to good water supplies…..and finally much more recent development going all the way back into 1916 when Schurz Chevrolet opened up shop across from Community Christian School…..to say nothing about all those houses built over time just west or southwest corner Canal Bend road including the infamous SS Christopher Homes!
