On November 3, 1846, a meeting was called to create a town charter for what would later become Gurnee; twenty person applied for membership and twelve were elected trustees including John Prentice (the first mayor) Gurnee's growth paralleled that of the railroad which brought new development such as homes for workers, businesses and churches along with passenger services essential for commuters reaching Chicago through out Cook County including stops at Gurnee Mills station on Chicago & Northwestern Railway tracks just south of present day Elmhurst Road/US Highway 22nd St intersection east of present day Lake Shore Drive Southwestern edge of suburb In 1912 when Wabash Railroad merged with Indiana Central Railroad to form Conrail, many jobs being cut from northern Indiana due to consolidation saw many residents leave their homes for greener pastures across rival roadways but also opportunities here too starting with expansions into southern DuPage County One signifier of this growth came when then Mayor Prentice commissioned artesian wells located near current day Kresge Park which still supplies water today after centuries under groundwater recharge events following World War II when resources became scarce many found themselves displaced again like those living near Grayslake where IKEA started up followed by similar suburban construction projects outside Loop Community College boundaries continuing into this century especially around two ends: one northwest of downtown Urbana while another northwest corner developing betweening Research Triangle Park - North Carolina University - Duke University - UNC Chapel Hill – Wake Forest University corridor

This company was called "The Pritchett Manufacturing Company". That same year also saw another growth spurt when two brothers by the name of John Pritchett decided to move their family from Massachusetts to central Illinois where they set up an agricultural business producing hay, oats and other crops
