Gurnee, Illinois is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 508 at the 2000 census and 521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Gurnee is located on the eastern edge of Cook County and lies about 22 miles (35 km) east of downtown Chicago. The first permanent settler in what would become Gurnee was Nicholas J. Sheehan, who arrived in 1836 from Waterford, Ireland. He named his new land "Sheehan's Prairie." By 1840 there were 10 settlers living in Gurnee: six men and four women - Anna Maria Canavan (age 25), Mercy Canavan (age 23), Fanny Waitniss (aged 17), Catherine Cochrane (age 15; daughter of James Cochrane), Jemima Priestly(age 12; daughter of John Priestly). Esther Haggerty also lived in Gurnee for a time when she was married to one of its early settlers, Drury Haggerty. In 1847 local farmers acquired 640 acres (248 ha) around present-day downtown Gurnee from John Prentice through an agreement that gave them back if he failed to sell it within five years to another farmer or build a town therein. As part of this deal, Prentice agreed not to lay down any brick until he had seen evidence that a town would be erected thereon – something he did not achieve until after his death in 1865 (). In 1870–71 Wm. Phelps organized a group which built what became known as Phelps' Mills Community College (), now Northwestern University (). At the same time that Phelps' Mills was being built nearby by locals on land acquired from Prentice, another group laid out what would become South Side Village () on 500 acres (224 ha) just northwest of modern-day GurnEE adjacent to Lake Michigan (); it too failed to gain favor with residents until 1904 when it was renamed Park Ridge . In 1872 Charles Nordstrom purchased 1/2 mile (.640 km) northeast of present-day Downtown Gurnee from De Witt Clinton for $375 ($10 per acre). Nordstrom named his farm "Nordstrom's Prairie" after himself and later donated all or portions thereof to various organizations including North Shore Hospital (), Northwestern University (), Notre Dame de la Rivière (); Stony Brook University (); Glenbard North High School (); Mount Carmel Catholic Church (); and Holy Cross Parish (). By 1900 only 139 people lived in Gurnee proper while 2135 people lived within its limits including 2182 students at Phelps' Mills Community College (). Only 9% of the population ever earned incomes over $20 per week according to 1910 census data (). In 1912 Elisha Schieffer opened Schieffer's grocery store on Second Street near current day Elmwood Avenue () - becoming one of the earliest grocers in what would become Chicago . The early 20th century saw many businesses closed due mainly to Prohibition which made farming difficult but also led many families out into cities looking for work during prohibition era . By 1920 all incorporated municipalities except for Rensselaer Township had been established with only Rensselaer Township remaining unincorporated because its residents refused annexation by eitherChicago or Cook County during their first referendum election campaign (!); this refusal allowed Cook County jurisdiction over Rensselaer Township even though no taxes were levied thereon (. .)
