Gurnee is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Gurnee was James Prentice, who homesteaded on the present site of Gurnee Township in 1836. The village began as a small farmstead and mill town located about south of where it now stands on Clinton Street between Prairie Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue. A post office called Gurnee was established in 1864, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. In 1892, John Crain founded what would become First National Bank of Chicago on State Street east of downtown Chicago; Gurnee became an official community within First National Bank's corporate limits that year. In 1899–1900, Gurnee erected its first public building: a schoolhouse which served as both municipal hall and civic center for the community until 1915 when a new courthouse/ district court house replaced it. In 1902, members of the local "Daughters of the American Revolution" (DAR) formed their own chapter here and soon organized other patriotic organizations such as the Masonic Lodge #1 (Masonic lodge #1 being one of only two lodges then active in Cook County), Odd Fellows#2 (Odd Fellows #2 also being one of only two lodges then active), Presbyterian Church (Methodist church), Knights Templar#3 (Knights Templar#3 also being one of only two lodges then active), American Legion#4 (American Legion#4 also being one of only two lodges then active) and Irish Republican Brotherhood#5 (Irish Republican Brotherhood#5 also being one of only two Lodges then active). From 1906 to 1912 there were three mayors: Wm Hickey from 1907 to 1909; John Ransom from 1910 to 1912; and Jno Drysdale from 1913 to 1917 all men with no mayoral term limit set before them by statute or ordinance passed by City Council prior to their election date but serving out their full terms without possibility for re-election thereafter.
