Gurnee is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 113,491 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Gurnee is located on the north side of Chicago and on the south bank of the Chicago River. The first known inhabitants of what is now Gurnee were a group of Lenape Indians who lived in an area that includes present-day Gurnee and parts of Westchester and Willard counties. In 1824, John Fritchard built a log cabin at what is now eastbound I-55 and westbound I-290 near today's downtown Gurnee. Fritchard named his cabin "Gurnee". By 1830, about 60 acres (240 hectares) had been surveyed for town Lots in what would become Gurnee Township; these lots were sold to settlers in 1836 by General David Dixon for $5 per acre (0.30 per square kilometer). In 1840, when much of present day Cook County was included within Lake Michigan Township boundaries, Gurneefield Manor (later part of Evergreen Park) was purchased from the State by Nicholas Pareja for $853 ($ today). That same year saw industry start with three small millsinery shops being operated out of two buildings on Dearborn Street: Mrs. John Hickey's millinery shop opened in 1841, while Jorgensen & Elder ran a flour mill from 1842 to 1865; and Eaddy Keys' lace factory opened in 1848 became one of America's largest lace fabric operations employing up to 1,500 workers until it closed its doors in 1954. A fourth small millinery shop opened northeast corner Dearborn & Griggs Streets later that year also operated as Bemis & Wilde's dry goods store which closed around 1960s due to competition from Sears Roebuck & Co.'s department store opening across town soon thereafter In 1860, large quantities of coal were brought downriver by steamboats called the Illinois Central Railroad and mined during their trip downriver to be carted away to be used at other mines further upriver; this led directly to development along First Avenue near where those mines are now located including Waukegan Brewing Company which started brewing beer there back then This period also saw some important changes with taverns starting up as places where farmers could meet before going into operation as stores began popping up throughout town Additionally players such as George Grove started playing baseball here which helped grow attendance at local park locations like North Side Park The first high school students graduated from Normal School in 1870 after spending time working odd jobs or taking courses online In 1875 Englishman James Krieger arrived here from Iowa Territory via steamship calledthe Quincy . After teaching school for a few years he turned alcohol salesman before becoming manager/directorof Krieger Cigars . At this time most businesses including grocery stores went out OF BUSINESS due mainly to prohibition ; however several restaurateurs did manage to keep their businesses going such as Harry Dolan who managed Dolan’s Bakery until 1903 Eventually Prohibition ended with an act by President Woodrow Wilson signifying an end to liquor sales nationwide which caused many businesses owners – including Dolan –to file suit against him alleging trademark infringement One significant event during this time period that has been generally remembered occurred when boxing great Muhammad Ali fought Joe Frazier at McCormick Place gardens on December 12th 1964

Gurnee is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,682 at the 2010 census. Gurnee is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village is within the Chicago–Naperville–Bethlehem, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Gurnee was organized on February 14, 1855 from parts of Hinsdale and Wilmette Township. On October 4, 1857, it merged with the Town of Mount Prospect to form the Village of Gurnee and Micropolitan Statistical Area. On January 1, 1959, the Village became an independent municipality and was designated as a Micropolitan Statistical Area by then-US President John F Kennedy. The Village had a total population of 12,084 as of July 1st 2020. The first settler in what would become Gurnee was Levi Coffin who arrived on August 25th 1837 from Connecticut with his family and six other settlers. He erected a log cabin near present day Lincoln Park Cemetery on land which he donated to the town for $2 per acre (or $ in ). In 1840 when George Washington Dixon settled in this area he also donated land to the town for $2 per acre (). After being taxed 6 times ($24) on his rural property in Springfield Township (now Fox Lake), Dixon decided to move into what would become Gurnee where he built himself a small brick home on North Avenue between Whitehall Road and Washtenaw Avenue in 1850 (). By 1870 there were over seventy homes residing in Gurdieville when it voted itself a full town charter with Nathanial Biddle as its first mayor (). In 1892 opening date for railroads reached here after years previous efforts by various farmers who used horses pulling carts loaded down with grain that navigated Barton Creek through these woods to market towns along I-88Chicago () This creek had been named much earlier by Potawatomi Indians because they believed that “Girdie” or “Groundhog Day” occurred every year around this time so they named their new settlement after one such spirit or personification () And so we have our earliest known reference to everyone who lived here before cars were invented; people walked or took horse & buggy trips all over this beautiful area! It wasn't until about 1910 however when autos began coming into use which caused more development around here! From then until today we continue living our lives primarily off OF traffic! On October 11th 1908 two brothers named Harry and Alanson Drysdale purchased 2 acres just east of present day Whitehall Road and renamed it “Dryden” after their father who had died 3 years earlier while operating a sawmill near Dryden Furnace on Racine River (). They continued farming there until 1915 when they sold out due to World War I military service – Harry went backpacking through Europe while Alanson stayed home raising chickens while also working at their father’s mill). As word spread about this wonderful place called Dryden some wealthy men began driving up from Chicago looking for farmland closer to city services etc., finally selecting parcels near current site where they built homes starting with Mrs Florence Smith’s house located just south side current day Lincoln Drive & west side past High School now owned by Media Ventures LLC .
