Gurnee, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2000 census. Gurnee is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what became Gurnee were two families from New York City: the Fords and the Lincolns. John Ford had come to America in 1821 with his brother-in-law, Daniel Webster. He built a cabin on an old farm near present-day Quincy, MA; he named it "Gurnee". By 1825, John Ford's son Angus had arrived from Scotland and started a family of his own in Gurnee. In 1830–1831, David Rice founded the village of Ripon on the south side of Rock Island Lake near Gurnee (now Orland Park). The name "Ripon" was derived from one of David Rice's ancestors who settled there in 1777. In 1835–1836, Amos Temple bought a tract of land east of Gurnee from David Rice for $500 ($ as of 2019). With this purchase, Amos Temple laid the groundwork for what would become Northwestern Illinois University (NIIU), one of America's preeminent research universities. NIIU was chartered by Congress on February 14th, 1839 as Northwest Indiana Agricultural College and opened its doors to students on September 5th that year with twenty-six students; today NIIU has more than 12,000 undergraduate students and numerous graduate programs across fourteen faculties. The following year saw another milestone when Amos Temple donated land to build what would become today's UIUC campus – now known as UIUC Oval Campus - making NIIU oneida Valley Campus'. On May 3rd 1840 just prior to Ohio statehood all public colleges within Ohio were placed under common jurisdiction by Act No., 1 & 10 Ute Indians Affairs Blockading Squadron Bill No.: 9 “An act for supporting American Education” This legislation provided for authority over all public institutions including universities within Native American reservations/tribes subject to their respective governments but not subject to federal regulation or oversight
