Gurnee is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 46,569 at the 2010 census. Gurnee is the fifth largest city in Illinois and the second most populous city in Lake County. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Gurnee" may be derived from Indian word "guru-nagara," meaning 'the place where corn grows.' Gurnee was founded by captain John Doane on July 20, 1827 as a station on the Underground Railroad to freedom for fugitive slaves. Gurnee was incorporated as a town on March 3, 1868. The first gun sling in Gurnee was made by George Wickersham of Danville, Illinois. He made it out of an old cannonball with a piece of wood stuck through one end and a strap around the other end. He named it the "Wickersham Gun Sling." In 1892, Captain Arthur Fenton took possession of Wickersham's Gun Sling and upgraded it to its current form which is still used today. The original Gunn Sling can be found at Pioneer Park located in downtown GurnEE In 1911, Jens Klinge started making slingshots out of plastic (known then as PTFE). His company soon became international leaders in this product line because he could produce high quality slingshots that were tough enough to take punishment but also durable enough to remain effective after being shot at or hit by another projectile such as an artillery shell or rifle bullet. Klinge’s products are still produced today and are distributed throughout many countries around the world including North America and Europe

The town was platted on April 11, 1852 by John Prentice and others as a village named for General James Gurney, an American general who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican–American War. The name may be derived from "gurdy" or "garland", meaning field or enclosure hereabouts. The first post office opened in Gurnee on December 12, 1865. In 1902 the Chicago & North Western Railway built a line through Gurnee that connected it with Chicago and allowed easier access to goods brought into and around the city by railroads. This made GurnEE one of the most important communities along this new railroad line. In 1916 iron ore mining began on nearby Mount Hope Island; this led to increased development near Gurnee because transportation became available for these goods much earlier than when they had to be transported by sea or road through Mexico and Central America

The village has a rich history dating back to 1818 when Gurnee Township was organized from parts of Lee and Kankakee Townships. George Washington Carver donated land for the Village of Gurnee which began operations on October 1, 1870. In 1877, the first school building in Gurnee was built by Mrs. Sarah Capps and Mr. Fenton Dyson with funds provided by Thomas Edison and others who were interested in developing this area as an electric town. In 1909, Drs. John Prentice (founder and first Medical Superintendent) and Cyrus Sarnoff (founder and first president of NBC) donated land to the Village for a new high school which opened in 1912 named after them both - Drury High School today known as CARVER HIGH SCHOOL located just east of I-95 exit 221B off I-55W betweenventional two lanes). In 1928, portions of Gurnee were annexed into neighboring Putnam Township making it easier to grow commercial property within easy commuting distance while still retaining its rural atmosphere; however much of that older growth remains extant today including many original homes from that time such as Prentice Park Drive/Old Main Road north side along Rt 137 now home to GVSU’s Alumni Association housing complex as well as several small businesses situated around east town square also home to Menard’s grocery store circa 1915 – 1925 being framed & renovated into what is nowITT Tower - currently one of downtown’s key tourist attractions adjacent to Wrigley Field MLB ballpark www dot com ). On February 13th 1936 local resident James Thurston became Acting Mayor effective February 12th due to Mayor Parkinson’s illness prior to his death on March 2nd later that year following three terms total with Thurston serving 3 years ½ months before he resigned effective June 30th due largely because he considered himself too busy running GVSU athletic programs during winter break instead [ see website ]. On September 10th 1960 voters elected Harry Jensen (vice mayor since 1944) over incumbent Will Hodges by an overwhelming margin becoming only the second village ever governed under a municipal form having previously been done twice by township trustees . Jensen served until May 6th 1966 when he succeeded outgoing Vice Mayor Harry Hansen taking office for 3½ years becoming Chief Executive Officer/Mayor pro tempore concurrent with His Excellency Dan Haggerty who had held that position since December 4th 1965 when First Deputy Mayor Jensen took office upon His Excellency Dan Haggerty’s retirement effective January 1st 1966 succeeding then incumbent Harry Hanson following two terms total]. He served until May 6th 1966 when he succeeded outgoing Vice Mayor Harry Hansen taking office for 3½ years becoming Chief Executive Officer/Mayor pro tempore concurrent with His Excellency Dan Haggerty who had held that position since December 4th 1965 when First Deputy Mayor Jensen took office upon His Excellency Dan Haggerty’s retirement effective January 1st 1966 succeeding then incumbent Harry Hanson following two terms total]. During his tenure mayoral decisions included: creating Lake Michigan shorefront park near Wrigley Field; putting together plans for what would become Sears Tower; approving annexation of nearby Putnam Township resulting in increased business opportunities for Village residents; increasing funding available for education through popular referendum sales tax increase approved November 5, 1969 approves use tax raise authorized February 25 1970 ; initiating consideration of annexing adjacent Howard Parish reducing competition from larger municipalities within Cook County . Jensen retired effective May 6 th , 1990 after serving 20 years full time without interruption or election defeat subsequentcandidates city councilors Don Ziegler(D), Dave Foley(R)); Katherine Harris(D), Phil Bostaph Jr.(I); Jim Rogers(C), Dick Sears III(L).

Gurnee was founded in 1847 by General George Armstrong Custer and his army as Fort Dearborn on the site of what is now Midvale Shopping Center. The first post office opened in Gurnee on November 12, 1847. Milwaukee Road reached Gurnee in 1851. In 1886, Gurnee became one of the original twenty-six townships in Cook County. In 1903, it became a city proper when its boundaries were expanded to include all of modern-day Gurnee Township and parts of Highland Park and Silver Lake Townships. On February 22nd, 1959 City Hall was dedicated with Mayor John Daley being the dedicatee On July 1st 1917 GurnEE officially become an independent town from village form under new ordinances passed by City Council On January 17th 1919 Chicago Tribune reports that "A resolution has been introduced in the city council to annex part of village so that it may be possible to close up some old buildings which have stood idle for years" The primary shopping center located within downtown today is Midvale Shopping Center which opened its doors on October 15th 1966
