Gurnee, Illinois is a town of about 30,000 people located in the eastern section of Cook County, Illinois. It’s one of the most populous communities in Cook County and has a long history with gun magazines. The first gun magazine in Gurnee was opened in 1892 by Wm. H. Greer and A.F. Copley. The Greers were early members of the Republican Party and were instrumental in helping to found the town’s first political organization, the Democratic Committee of Gurnee (later renamed the Gurnee Civic League). The center of town began expanding rapidly around 1900 when a new rail line was built that connected Gurnee with Cleveland (then known as Sheboygan) via Elmira and Northbrook. The city's first hospital- Bethel Hospital- opened in 1903 on East Grand Boulevard just north of today's State Street intersection. Other early buildings include what is now Northwestern Mutual Tower (1912), First National Bank Building (1914), Sheboygan County Courthouse (1920), Lutheran Church (1922), Gurnee High School (1892).
