Gurnee's name means "broad meadow" and its original downtown was built on a large open space which still remains today. Gurnee has been called "the heart of Chicago" and "a model town." The first settlers in what would become Gurnee were farmers who arrived in 1836 from Ohio. A small community developed around courthouse square where traders and merchants conducted their business. By 1840, there were twelve homes and three stores in Gurnee. In 1862, General Ulysses S Grant visited Gurnee while on his way to campaign against Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Upon his return to Springfield he recommended that Illinois annex Gurye as a suburb so that it could be closer to military installations and supplies needed for the war effort - this idea was approved by Governor John Pomeroy and General Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., with only some minor opposition from local residents. The annexation created much controversy because many felt that it would increase inequality between rich suburbanites and poor rural residents; however, over time these tensions dissipated as both groups started intermingling more freely within their own communities. In 1865-1866, work began on building what would become Northwestern University in nearby Evanston; soon after Northwestern opened its doors for business there were also calls for Gurye to join them but this request too received mixed reactions until finally Mayor James Molyneaux convinced the university trustees to allowGurye access toarsity sports programs without havingto conform to Northwestern's strict rules about gender segregation (a policy known as 'Separate but equal').
