In 1870, Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) completed its line from downtown Montreal to North Bay via the Victoria Park Bridge. This allowed for easier transportation between Montreal and North Bay, which in turn helped explode the city's economy and population growth. By 1923, there were over 1 million people living in Montreal proper – making it one of Canada's largest cities by population.
Gurnee, Illinois was settled by the American Indians in 1824. The first white settler in Gurnee was Captain James Wilkinson. He purchased land from the Potawatomi tribe and built a house on what is now the corner of College and Franklin Streets. In 1829, he married Sarah Cook and together they started a small farm near the intersection of College and Franklin Streets. The couple had two children, Sarah Cook Wilkinson and John Wilkinson. In 1832,Captain James Wilkinson died leaving his wife with three small children to support alone. After several years of struggling, Mrs. Wilkinson started a bakery business near her home on College Street which she operated for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. Mrs. Wilkinson also ran an opera house for many years until it burned down in 1886. During the American Civil War, Gurnee played a important role as both a military post and manufacturing center due to its location at strategic points along the Great Lakes region. When Springfield lost its main trade route through central Illinois due to war restrictions, Gurnee became one of Springfield's primary markets for goods produced in nearby towns such as Peoria and Carbondale. However, during World War I when production stopped at local factories because of war-related limitations, Gurnee experienced some economic difficulties that were not repeated during later wars thanks to advances in technology and industry elsewhere in the country experiencing similar wartime constraints (e example: aluminum production). GURNEE HISTORY: 1) 1784 - A group of French colonists settle on land east of present day Gurnee after exploring northern Indiana Territory during 1783-1785 expedition led by Pierre Marquette . 3 families established themselves here: La Salle family (Charcuterie), DeGraffenried family (Agriculture), Trottier family (Manufacturing). 2) 1830 - First white settler is Capt JW Wilkinson who purchases about 4 acres from Potawatomi Tribe for $100/acre . Development begins with early pioneer buildings including log cabin & outhouse located on current site of Woodward Drive today . 2 more acres are purchased within 10yrs & construction continues apace with new brick houses being erected soon thereafter . 3rd settler is Sarah Cook Wilkinson who starts farming operation north of present day School Rd w/ 2 boys & 1 girl under 9 yrs old called Sockwell Farmstead #1; first useable coach service available between Dec 1840- Mar 1845 . 4th settleecker is John W illkinson who starts grocery store on currentsite w/ commissary supplies Apr 1850s – becoming largest grocer west of Chicago (& first retailer open 24 hrs.) while continuing operations at schoolhouse until 1861
