Gurnee, Illinois is a town of about 62,000 people located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. It is bordered by the towns of Northbrook to the north, Boxford to the east, Mokena to the south, and Arlington Heights to the west. Gurnee is an agricultural center with a major manufacturing industry. The population has grown steadily since its incorporation as a village in 1892. The first settlers in Gurnee were farmers who arrived from Indiana in 1827. They developed corn and other crops and built stores and homes on what is now Main Street. A post office was established in 1838, and by 1850 Gurnee had a population of about 100 residents. The town was incorporated as a village on December 12, 1892. At that time it had a total population of just over 500 residents. The early years were difficult for Gurnee because it was surrounded by farmland that remained undeveloped until after World War II when developers began purchasing land around Chicago for subdivisions. In 1959 GurnEE became one of four towns merged into Chicago's then-new Crystal City neighborhood which increased its size by almost 50%. Today, Gurnee continues to be an agricultural center with some significant Manufacturing Industry including: Paper Products (Auromere), plastics (Ecoflex) & Construction Materials (Cordier). Its surface area rivals that of most large U S cities but its population only ranks 3rd among large American cities based upon 2016 Census figures

Gurnee is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,702 at the 2010 census. Gurnee is located on the banks of the Chicago River. It was founded by General John Jacob Astor in 1836 as a small trading post on the site of present-day Gurnee Mills and became an industrial center after being annexed by Chicago in 1847. In 1893, Gurnee was elevated to city status and annexed by Lake Forest Park. The first settlement in what is now Gurnee was made up of families from Noble and Douglas Counties who gathered around the large oak tree on the current site of Gurnee Mills in 1836. After some disputes over boundaries between those settlements, General John Jacob Astor organized a group of settlers to establish a new trading post called "Gurney" on July 4th, 1836. At that time there were only six or seven families living in what is now GurnEE City limits today; most likely because they were not welcomed into annexation by Chicago until later years when much larger tracts were reacquired from various landowners east of Wacker Drive (i.e., still part of Lake Forest Park). The original town plat for "Gurney" showed one block long measuring 100 feet wide and 25 feet deep with four streets running north-south each having one lane width (the present day Ogden Street ran east-west). The land for this initial community was acquired from Simon Cameron (a brother-in-law of General Astor) through gift, sale or purchase including 3/4 mile² along both sides of Dearborn Street which runs parallel to Ogden Street - this parcel forms today's South Side neighborhood boundary. There are several contributing sources for early community development such as: 1) Captain George Washington Weems’ map drawn about 1830 which shows two small villages near wherepresent day Michigan Avenue & Randolph Road intersection now stands; 2) A deed dated 7/1/1846 from Elijah Parish Land Company to George Sperry showing acreage bounded by Dearborn St., Randolph Rd., Michigan Ave., & West Side Dr.; 3) A deed dated 10/13/1848 from Levi Coffin & Sons Co.(now Sears Roebuck) to Andrew Johnson(then Mayor Of Chicago), listing Lots Nos 12 & 13 (now Bensonhurst Blvd.) Block No 5; 4) A deed dated 8/11/1850 from Elijah Parish Land Company to Capt Samuel Morse(later Supervisor Of Streets And Sanitation District Of New York City), lot No 31 - said area includes parts of our current North Side neighborhood boundary; 5) A deeddated 11/2/1851from Elijah Parish Land Company To Abraham Kapp(founder Of Kapp Bros Dyers Union Stockyards), lots Nos 15 thru 17 Blocks Nos 6 thru 9 adjacent to present day State Road #815 southbound just pastcurrent day Hwy 134 junction - all these deeds show parcels that would eventually become our North Side Neighborhood Boundaries including areas currently within our Bensonhurst Boulevard & Wilson Rd boundaries
Gurnee, Illinois was founded in 1847 by George A. Smith. The town was named after General James Gurney, who helped lead the United States army during the Mexican-American War. The first store in Gurnee opened in 1851. In 1870, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad arrived in Gurnee and soon made it a commercial center. The town's population grew rapidly and by 1912 it had over 100 businesses. In 1916, Gurnee became one of the towns in Cook County that were annexed into Chicago.
