The name originated from an Indian word meaning "a meadow by the river." At first, Grayslake consisted of just a few houses and a tannery. However, over time it grew into a small town with about 100 residents. In 1876, Grayslake became the county seat of Cook County when Winnetka was moved to that position from Rockford.
