Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,730 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Grayslake is located on the eastern edge of Cook County and straddles Lake Michigan to the east. The village of Grayslake proper lies to the south and west while Rolling Meadows and Westmont lie to the north and east. Grayslake was founded by Levi Richardson in 1836 as a small community on the banks of the Rouge River. Richardson named his new settlement after Gray's Harbor on Long Island, New York. In 1841, he sold his share in Grayslake to John Hennepin for $1,000 cash. By 1846, Hennepin had built a two-story brick courthouse and several homes in what is now Grayslake Village. In 1849–50, he also built a smallpox hospital at 7 Elm Street in what is now Grayslake Township near present day North Avenue and Western Highway. In 1865, Grayslake became one of twenty townships (later counties) organized within Cook County through an act of the Illinois General Assembly following its passage under pressure from President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. On July 1, 1870, Grayslake united with neighboring Rolling Meadows to form village of Rolling Meadows which contained 498 residents; it merged with neighboring Westmont on November 9th that year to create a new village with 511 residents known today as "Grayson". George Muhlenberg served as its first mayor from 1870 until his death in 1901; he was succeeded by his son George Muhlenberg Jr.. On December 15th 1905 an oil well was drilled by Standard Oil Company off of Old Ford Road just south of present day Grayslake Village; this well led to increased development around it due to its proximity to water supplies essential for industry indays days). After years of speculation over who would win control over this important natural gas field - notably due partly to Armour Field being discovered nearby - production began production at Alcoa's Algoma plant #3 (now demolished) on May 1st 1916 when gasoline began flowing out! The townspeople reacted quickly against this additional development - some even burning downAlcoa's plant - but eventually succumbed to popular demand for housing closer to jobs or shopping malls across downtown Chicago than they could find elsewhere in their township or county counterparts; this led eventually (1948)to incorporation as Parkside Township adjacent thereto into Cook County along with other adjoining villages such as Deerfield Beach (west), Antioch (northwest), Glen Ellyn (southwest), Lockport (east), Schaumburg Heights (northwest), Crystal Lake Heights (northeast) etc.. Today there are few buildings remaining from early 19th century grayskake life including many houses built for farmers directly next door colling up Old Ford Rd between Lakeshore Dr & Armstrong Rd
