Grayslake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the northwest side of Chicago. The population was 9,902 at the 2010 census. Grayslake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Grayslake was incorporated in 1959 and merged into the town in 2002. The first settlers to Grayslake were farmers who arrived from Indiana in 1829. They founded a community called Beech Grove on land that now includes most of the downtown district. In 1831, Samuel List bought some additional land and named it Grayslake after his family's home near Edinburgh, Scotland. list's nephew also named his son John Grayslake after his uncle's home countryman Through many changes over time, Grayslake has evolved into an important community with a rich history and culture that has influenced many aspects of life in Chicago today. Some notable residents include: businessman George Romney (father of Republican Ulysses S. Grant), author Fannie Flagg (founder of Humble Pie restaurant chain), journalist Edward Renehan (creator of "My Life as an Allegory"), lawyer Emilio Chirinos (former boss at Sears Roebuck & Co.), and grain merchant James Acheson (brother-in-law to former Ulysses S. Grant). In 1902, following years of development work by then-Mayor Alfred Daley, the city annexed much of north suburban Cook County including what is now Grayslake Village and parts of Skokie Heights and Irving Park neighborhoods - giving rise to oneResidents call this period 'The City Expansion'. During World War II, plants were built at Grays Lake for Armour Ammunition Company and other military manufacturers; these facilities are now known as Samsun Elementary School District No. 3 campus housing units across from McCormick Place shopping center on West Side Highway 1B just eastbound off South Washington Boulevard Extension Rd., between I-94W and I-635E exits 2A & 2B exit ramps going south onto I-635E

Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Grayslake was founded on December 12, 1871 by George W. Grays and his wife Emma as a small farming community near the current location of Aurora. In 1886, Grayslake became an incorporated village and in 1912 it became a city. On January 1, 2013, Grayslake merged with Aurora to form one city government under the name of "Aurora-Grayslake". The first settler in what would become Grayslake was George W. Grays who arrived in 1871 from Kentucky via New York City. He built a cabin on what is now State Street and named it Gray's Lake after his father-in-law Amos Brown grained corn there for years before moving to Aurora in 1875 where he started a grocery store and post office called The Gables which opened on December 12th of that year. By 1888 when Village Green was platted - making it possible for residents to vote - many everyday people had come to live here including farmers such as John Ahern (1836-1912), Elisha Morse (1860-1930) and Isaac Niles (1857-1920). In 1912 when City Limits were drawn up within Cook County it included all but one present day township: Kane County eastBound through Schaumburg Township to its junction with Uniontown Twp., then south along Uniontown Twp., thence due west acrossowned by Kane Co., into Rock Island Co.: thus leaving only Appleton Township remaining within the limits of City Limits annexed by Aurora Jan 1st 1913 (just prior to incorporation into city)...Xavier Schiebering came overland from Racine WI July 5th 1850 & soon began Cultivating land which he named Prairie du Chien...In this early time there were noroads nor telephone service so settlers had to rely upon their own transportation…All water main lines were brought in about 1914 or 1915 when signals began being sent using radio waves...Settlement continued until 1946 when annexation by Plainfield created an even more urgent need for water services due to rapid growth & increasing suburban development...Today we enjoy some great amenities offered by our new city government including excellent public education system; world class parks; modern infrastructure including high speed internet; expressways nearby; etc." Thanksgiving Day Parade 1923 photo courtesy of US Census Bureau
