At first it consisted only of a single section as Rancho de los Pinos east of present-day Grayslake Boulevard and north-south lanes were built to connect with other sections through purchase or gift by early settlers. On April 15, 1907, an act proposed by Congressman John J. Fenton increased the size of Grayslake from 2 square miles (6 square kilometers) to 4square miles (10 square kilometers). On July 6, 1909 another act proposed by Congressman George Norris increased further its size to 6 square miles (15 square kilometers). In 1932 almost all original land in what is today Grayslake was annexed into Hinsdale Township so that it could be developed for housing developments and shopping centers which would become one major industry in the village during that time period but without anyvillage government control over those developments like it had been since 1872 when Grayslake was founded as a farmstead with about 100 residents. Grayslake was first settled in 1847 by German immigrants who named it "Dresden." The name Dresden means "gray" and "ahl" (a farm). The town site was chosen as it had a high degree of serenity and calm that appealed to early settlers. The first post office established in Grayslake was called Dresden, but the name was changed to Grayslake in 1851 because of its similarity to the original Saxon word for gray (grai). In 1865, Grayslake became one of the towns created from northern parts of Cook County when Chicago was formed. At this time, most residents lived on land east of Wabash Avenue between Clinton and Quincy Streets. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location near major transportation hubs such as Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad stations and being on navigable waterways like the Fox River. In 1892, Grayslake erected a water tower which still stands today as an example of early community architecture. That same year saw another milestone when Grosse Pointe Park—later known as Soldier Field—was opened to the public after years of efforts by local citizens including Alfred Pritzker Sr., founder of Pritzker Restaurants Inc.—the largest food service company in Chicago at that time. During World War II, Grayslake played host to V-E Day ceremonies at Soldier Field which were televised across North America. Later that year, Grayslake also hosted NHL games between Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Joe Louis Arena before both teams left for war overseas.
