In 1924, Grayslake became one of the few communities within Cook County to be dedicated to electric streetcar service when it opened its lines to the rest of the city limits. The township continued to serve as an individual community until 2003 when it merged with Rockford into that city's larger boundaries. Today, Grayslake remains primarily a rural community with soils rich in potassium and magnesium deposits; however, there are plans for development including retail and apartment buildings on some of its acres

Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,055 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Grayslake was founded by George Grays and named for his family's home on the edge of a bend in the Fox River. The first post office was established in 1868, and grayslake village was incorporated in 1879. The city of Grayslake merged with neighboring Park Ridge on April 1, 1999 to form one municipality with a population of 73,711 residents. The merger allowed for more rapid economic development and growth within the newly formed municipality than had been possible within either city alone; it has since become an economically vibrant community that is home to several high-tech companies as well as various shopping malls and professional sports stadiums. Grayslake also features a large number of historic homes dating back to pioneer days such as Callie House, built c 1830 by John Callahan and his wife Catherine Griggs; Mrs. Eliot House (later renamed Alice house), built c 1860 by Hiram Eliot; Mrs. Phelps' Store (now known as Evelyn Phelps Home Museum), built c 1870 by Elias Phelps; Samuel Morse's cabin (now known as Samuel Morse Museum); Edwin Stanton's millrace house (now known as Edwin Stanton Mansion); and many others which are open to public visitation during regular business hours or when conditions allow for tours only after special arrangements have been made with local preservation organizations
