After World War II Grayslake grew rapidly as manufacturing moved out of town to larger facilities outside of Chicago, but although it retains some historic buildings including the old steel plant along State Street, graying neighborhoods have replaced these older industries in recent years. According to 2011 census data, there are now more than 22% black residents in Grayslake compared to just 6% white residents while Hispanic residents account for 10%. African Americans make up about 12% of total employment while Asians make up 1%. Most people here identify themselves as White American or something similar according to self-reported race/ethnicity data from the 2000 US Census

Grayslake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Grayslake was first settled by Germans in 1838 and was originally called "Grunswick". In 1846 it changed its name to Grayslake after George Gray, an early settler. The community grew rapidly during the late 1800s and reached its peak in 1920 with a population of 10,000 people.During World War II Grayslake served as a training center for USAAF pilots. After the war it declined significantly in population until revitalization began in the 1990s led by Mayor Dick Slattery and subsequent economic development. The town's namesake is George Gray who arrived from Brunswick, Germany in 1838 with his family and founded Grayslake on what would later be known as Maple Street (now Forest Avenue). He initially served as supervisor of township 6 and then became mayor of township 8 before his death in 1849. His son-in-law John Crouch purchased land adjacent to Gray's original home on Maple Street and founded Crouch Shoe store which quickly grew into one of the most successful businesses in grayslake history.In 1865 George Paulding moved from Chicago to start a flour mill near present day Elmhurst Road/Greene Boulevard where he continued to operate until his deathbed in 1923. Paulding's grandson Harry Paulding started Grendel Chevrolet dealership on Deerfield Road northeast of town shortly thereafter This business spawned many other small businesses that continue to thrive today such as Swarenstein Flowers & Gifts (founded 1963), Little America Dairy (founded 1978), Grocery Outlet Inc.(founded 1984) - all located within easy walking distance of each other! Grayslake has experienced periodic growth throughout its history due largely to two factors: annexation by neighboring towns during Prohibition era; however since prohibition ended Jay Zopf opened upgrains stores dotting every nook and cranny of this once impoverished community! The current incarnation of Grayslake began growing again following slattery’s renaissance efforts when he successfully lobbied for state funding for redevelopment projects that included creating new parks, improving transportation options including turning Maple Lawn Drive into a major thoroughfare leading directly into downtown Chicago via expressway planning - essentially making grayslake central business district again! ensuing economic growth has lead to increased housing prices along with expanded retail opportunities – now considered one of Chicagos top liveliest neighborhoods !!!
