Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Grayslake is derived from "Gray's Lake," which lay near the present-day town. The first settler in Grayslake was John Gray, who arrived in 1835. A post office was established at Grayslake on November 1, 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 15, 1907. Grayslake became a village on December 16, 1909. On January 1, 1913, it merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form the new city of Chicago. In 1915–1916 Grayslake hosted one of the famous International Expositionivals; this time it was called "Hollywood Park." In 1924 its name reverted to Grayslake and Arlington Heights again united as one municipality.

Grayslake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,936 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Grayslake is adjacent to Lake Michigan and is one of the most diverse communities in the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Grayslake were Native Americans who lived on the site of present-day Grayslake Township and north of it on land that today forms part of Winnetka Heights. In 1824, John Stephenson built a log cabin at what is now Scott Park in Grayslake Township, becoming the first white person to reside there. In 1836, Methodist Episcopal Reverend Wm. Hite moved to Grayslake from Bloomington and founded a mission chapel here. By 1840, all Europeans had been expelled from Grayslake except for two Germans: Adam Weishaupt and Johann Gottfried Kühnenberg (1802-1884). In 1846, George Washington Carver bought some 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day Grayslake Township for $2 per acre ($/ha). He organized an agricultural society with this land as its goal and began harvesting corn, beans and other crops there beginning in 1848. The Carvers continued this farming operation until their death in 1927; their heirs continued it until 1978. A post office called Galesburg was established at what is now Graceland Drive in 1865; it was discontinued in 1907. A post office called Pleasant Prairie was established at what is now Hillside Road northeast of Graceland Drive in 1889; it was discontinued in 1915. Italians who had arrived during the American Civil War settled near what are now Clinton Avenue and Beverly Drive east of present-day Graceland Drive starting around 1870; they named their community Cicero after Cicero County, Illinois where they originally resided. This community also disappeared during prohibition era but some remnants can be found today along North Clinton Avenue between Cicero Avenue and Belvedere Road near Schaumburg Hills Elementary School . Italian Americans living southward along Racine Street from current day Lombard Place east to just south of Cicero Avenue before turning southeast towards Highway 54 renamed their community Niles after Niles County,. Today these remnants can be found along Racine Street between Lombard Place and Dearborn Road near State College High School . After prohibition ended following World War II many African American veterans returning home took up residence mainly along US Route 90 which ran through several townships including graying Lincolnshire according to one source however others claim that main route running through Lincolnshire were Tyler Road - Danforth Road - South Holland Boulevard - East Stroudsburg Boulevard - White Marsh Boulevard while still others say only Lincolnshire side routes were affected
Grayslake, Illinois was founded in 1824 by John Griggs and his family. The townspeople named the town after their fallen kinsman, General James Griggs, who had been killed in action at the Battle of Buena Vista. The first store was built on High Street and operated by Mr. Griggs. In 1829, the first post office was established in Grayslake and it served as the center of township life until 1911 when it became a part of La Salle County. In 1835, a school was built in Grayslake and it continues to be used today as the West Side School District's primary school. In 1843, Drury Lane Baptist Church was organized and its first pastor, Rev. Aptheker Muhlenberg preached here from 1844-1845. Reverend Muhlenberg is also considered to be one of the founders of modern Lutheranism in America because he led a group of pastors from Illinois to start churches across North America with German language services in order to proselytize for Lutheranism among American Indians. In 1865, Grayslake became an incorporated city under state law and it has continued to grow since then with various annexations including Addison Township (1947), Arlington Heights (1963), Elmhurst (1973), Geneva (1985) and Mundelein (1991). In 2002, Grayslake annexed neighboring Byron Park which resulted in what is now known as grayskakean suburbs stretching out into much of Berwyn Township on one side while Ashton Village stretches out onto another side within unincorporated La Salle County on the other hand
