The Village took on an expanded role as an airbase during the war and even managed to build its own water system. After the war ended,Grayslake continued to grow with new businesses coming online including a grocery store in 1961 and later an information technology company in 1984. Today, Grayslake is one of Chicago’s most vibrant neighborhoods with restaurants, shops, theaters and other cultural attractions abound.

Grayslake was founded in 1836 as a post office and small village on the east side of what is now Grayslake Township. The name "Grayslake" is from the trading post of Grays Ferry on the Chicago River. The village became an incorporated town in 1908 and it became a city in 1955. The name "Grayslake" comes from two sources: first, from the river's current course through the township and secondly, from early settler George Ransom's observation that there were many trees near Grays Ferry where he had landed his boat when crossing to get soldiers for General Winfield Scott's army during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). There are several places with similar namesakes around other parts of Illinois: Streator, Lombard, Aurora, Harveyville and more. However, none of these towns have any connection to each other historically or geographically. In fact, they may all be descended from different settlements that happened along different routes at different times or may even have been named for completely unrelated people or events! Nevertheless - they all share some common characteristics that make them worth checking out: They are all located within one of Cook County's largest cities; their populations range between 25K and 50K; most are known for their vibrant nightlife/entertainment markets; and some (but not all) have beautiful agricultural villages within their boundaries too!

Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,627 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Grayslake were farmers who arrived from New England in the early 1800s. They named their land "Grayslake", after the village of Gray's Lake in Massachusetts. In 1836, Grayslake became a parish (a subdivision) of Evanston Township and was incorporated as a town on April 14, 1847. On November 3, 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General John Buford's army attacked Grayslake while General Ulysses S. Grant was away on an official visit to Warsaw, Indiana. Union General George Armstrong Custer led a cavalry charge that drove off the Confederate forces and destroyed their weapons and stores. The town prospered under Union rule until World War II when it lost its status as a municipality and became an agricultural community again under Republican control until it fell to violence in 1969 when Democratic Mayor John Daley took office. Daley announced his candidacy for re-election against then-Gov Quigley on October 15th of that year but failed to win election due to illegal voting practices by his opponent; however he did manage to improve city services which had been deteriorating since Quigley's time as mayor including creating new parks and playgrounds within Grayslake limitsalong with creating more jobs than any other Chicago suburb during his term (the last such accomplishment before suburbanization). This improved image finally caught up with Daley when he was impeached by the House of Representatives for corruption charges on August 16th 1992 following years of investigations into city government spending practices throughout his three terms as mayor totaling over $100 million dollars hidden from taxpayers--an amount equal to one percent of all City Council appropriations made between 1989 and 1992 alone! Consequently Daley resigned from office two days later effective September 17th after being found guilty on eleven counts including bribery conspiracy and obstruction of justice
