On November 15, 1881, Granite City was founded by a group of businessmen from New York City. The men had come to the area to find a new home for their business enterprise. They named their town after the granite that was being mined in the area. quickly became one of the most important and prosperous towns in Illinois. The town's success came from its location—in an ideal place to mine granite. It also had other advantages: granites were expensive to produce, so Granite City attracted businesses that could afford to invest in production. And finally, it had a healthy population base that fostered innovation and creativity. Granite City's growth spurt continued through the years, until World War II when the industry went into decline. But even during this difficult time, Granite City crews kept mining granite for local homes and businesses until 1958 when a new plant opened up in nearby Normalville. After that point, Granite City slowly lost its importance as an economic center due to changes in technology and competition from larger cities."

The first settler in Granite City was Andreas Springer who arrived in 1847 from Hesse-Darmstadt with his family. He built the first house in what is now the downtown core of town. After few years he sold his house and started to farm around it. In 1861springer's daughter Anna married Samuel Kapp and they started to build a small cabin on their property which stands today across from the Granite City Amtrak station on State Street. In 1865 postmaster John Fenton set up shop at someBTNC stores west of town and began to promote graniteness of products for new consumers coming into the area from Chicago or other cities looking for rocks for their homes or businesses. By 1870 nearly every store along State had sent its rock samples off to be analyzed by Murchison Brothers Laboratories Incorporated (MML). By this time granite became an established product throughout the Midwest due to its high quality and widely available availability compared to other materials such as sandstone or lavas that were being produced at this time
