Granite City, Illinois is a city in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,987 at the 2010 census. Granite City is the largest city in Hancock County by area. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the most populous city within Cook County. The first settlement in what would become Granite City was made on December 12, 1837 when John Wetherbee and his family founded a farmstead on land that now includes much of downtown Granite City. The first post office in Granite City was established on January 10, 1840. In 1847, a group of three men - Hiram Sibley, Amos Eaton and John Prentice - organized into a town corporation to help with infrastructure needs for their new community. By 1850, there were over fifty homes and businesses in town. In 1857-58 there was an influx of Germans who had come to work on construction projects around Chicago during the American Civil War (1861-65). Many of these people settled in what would become known as "the East Side", which extended from State Street all the way to Dearborn Avenue near Michigan Avenue. This area quickly became known as "Germantown" because of its high concentration of German-speaking residents and businesses. Granite City experienced rapid growth after it merged with neighboring village Harrisonville on October 1, 1860 pursuant to an act passed by the General Assembly of Illinois called An Act making Incorporation Easy for Village Unions Which Have No Lands beyond Their Limits . On July 1st 1870 Graniteland trustees voted unanimously to annex Harrisonville without any discussion or vote among themselves – this annexation triggered a chain reaction that led to other villages throughout Cook County being annexed as well over the next few years until all but one had been annexed by early 1919 when Terre Haute became officially incorporated as well
