In 1876, Granite City was the site of the world’s first rifle scope manufacturing. The company that operated there, Union Sporting Goods Company, became one of the most well-known and respected optics manufacturers in history. From their original facility on Third Street in downtown Granite City to their current location on South State Street, Union Sporting Goods Co. produced some of the most important riflescopes and binoculars in history. The company was founded by Abram Warner and his brother Amos Warner who were two of the primary inventors of rifle scopes. Abram Warner had been working as an optical engineer for a munitions firm in Danville when he began development of a new type of telescope called a “tangent” scope which could be adjusted to focus closerange objects without having to remove the eyepiece from your eye. The idea for this innovative device was developed with help from his brother Amos who also worked at the munitions firm. The Warner brothers patented their invention and named it after themselves – Union Sporting Goods Company (USSG). USSG quickly went into production and began shipping products all over Europe and America. By 1880, they had become one of the leading firearms retailers in America and were responsible for selling many iconic rifles such as Lewis guns, Browning pistols, Colt revolvers, Winchester shotguns etc. In 1892 they opened up a second plant in England which continued producing high quality riflescopes until 1911 when World War I destroyed much of European production capacity. After the war USSG transitioned into sales & marketing materials mainly but not exclusively aimed at hunting & target shooting enthusiasts but also served as a key supplier to commercial organizations such as Cabela’s Inc., Boeing & General Electric among others through its subsidiaries including: UST Optics (1946-1968), AGFA optics (1969-1998) before finally sold its assets to SBI Research Incorporated in 1998 parent company being dissolved by 2001. Although no longer making any products today, USSG is still remembered fondly thanks primarily to their pioneering work with rifle scopes back then which has helped make them one of those iconic companies that have long influenced both amateur astronomers and professional shooters alike!
