In 1847, Hardin and his fellow settlers entered into an agreement with John P., Jr., to build a town on their land east of Chicago on the site where Wicker Park now stands; this settlement became known as Granite City because much of the granite used in its construction came from granitic hills near Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1870, hard-working residents started working on creating houses out of logs that had been brought overland from Indiana by wagonloads; within two years all but one house had been constructed and all were occupied! By 1880 about 90% ofgranitesale sales took place within 10 miles (16 km)ofthecity center-a fact that helped make Granite City self-sufficient as a residential community and led to its nickname "The HomeTown". Many early entrepreneurs who made GraniteCity their home included GEOFFREY LINCOLN JR., JAMES FOSTER TYLER & SONS AND WILLIAM HUGHES METZGER & CO.; these men developed transportation routes through Kane County that allowed goods to be transported directly from mines to markets across Illinois without having to go through New York orChicago. During World War Iteen thousand people served in various branches of the military including 100 soldiers who enlisted at Granitelocal assembly plant; following Armistice peace returned many doors were reopened while small businesses closed due largely to high taxes levied during wartime which have only begunto recede since then although still higher than normal economic conditions exist today causedprimarilybyunemploymentanddeficits resultingfromnewspaper closuresduringrecession
