Hawkins and John P. Sprague to sell optical supplies and equipment to businesses throughout Illinois. In 1903, American Optical became a subsidiary of Theophile Gasset & Sons company known as Gatterer & Sons Incorporated. In 1907 American Optical merged with Theophile Gasset company to form American Theophile Corporation which continued to operate under that name until it merged into Jardine-Hull Glass Works in 1959
