Granite City is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1852 as a small settlement on the banks of the Chicago River. The original inhabitants of what is now Granite City were Native American people who lived near where they now live. The first Europeans to visit Granite City were part of an Englishman named John Richardson and his party which arrived on November 15, 1816 from Baltimore, Maryland. They named their new land "Granite Township", but soon realized that it would not be easy to build a post office there because of the river's current and high water levels. On December 3, 1818, John Richardson submitted a document to the General Court of Cook County pledging that he had bought from the Sauk Indians all present at Mill Woods (now Granite City) for $1 per acre (less than €0.50 per pound at today's prices). After some debate among commissioners about whether or not to accept this gift from Richardson, they did so and on January 13th 1819 erected a post office at Granitville with mail service beginning February 2nd 1819 In addition to its role as an early stage transportation hub for settlers moving westward across Illinois during the 1800s and into Missouri during the mid-19th century, Granitville also became known for its production of granite – both commercial grade granite used by manufacturers such as Pottery Barn & Macy's Department Store and household items like countertops and door handles – as well as its political stability due to its location near major nodes of trade including Chicago and St Louis until after World War II when those regions changed hands multiple times.
