Granite City is a small town in the Illinois Valley in northern Illinois. The population was 5,820 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Peoria, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Granite City was George Hickey who arrived in 1836. Hickey's land consisted of about two square miles and he built a cabin on it. He also raised chickens, cows and pigs on his land. In 1837, John Stephenson came to Granite City from Maryland with his family. He purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of the original granites and laid out a village square on it in 1838 named after himself, Granite City ( pronounced "granny"). The village had six stores, one blacksmith shop and one physician office. A post office was established at Granite City on November 1, 1840 by Elijah Purdy with the name of Northampton; but no mail ever reached it because there was no railroad then available to transport mail to Peoria! In 1846, David Rice moved from Decatur, IL togranite city and started an olive oil mill there which continued until 1865 when it burned down due to over-boilings! The town got its start as a stop for travelers on their way southward through central Illinois during what is now known as the "Famous Eighteenth Century Route." The first school in Gannett County was opened in 1840 by Reverend John Crouchmorris at what is now called White Rock Cemetery near present day Granite City Blvd., just north of I-635 exit K8N/KIL 625 Rd./US 72 exit 2B (now I-635 exit K8N). In 1850 Rev Crouchmorris organized a school district that included all of Gannett County under one roof! "It seems impossible not to be impressed by this unusual community," wrote historian Rufus Hoagland back then about Gannett County's pioneer days including White Rock School District #1: "There never has been anything like this before or since - an organized society which produced books and articles thumbing through old newspapers...This story would be more impressive if we could find documentary evidence that these people actually lived hereabouts". In addition to education opportunities for common citizens as well as skilled labor for farmers living outside of town limits due largely to lack of transportation options during those early days transportation became increasingly important with railroads becoming available starting around 1830s making travel within central Illinois much easier than it had been previously
Granite City was founded by the Rock Island Railroad in 1856. The city was named for the Granite quarries that were located nearby. The first store in Granite City opened in 1857. The city experienced a boom during the late 19th century, due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to resources such as coal, lead, and iron. However, Granite City's economy began to decline during the 20th century due to factors such as World War II and political instability. In 1960, Granite City became an independent city.
