Granite City is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Granite City Manufacturing Company was founded in 1872 by three men who had worked together for a local foundry. The company specialized in making granite rough goods such as bricks and stair railings. In 1907, the company merged with another Granite City business, the Illinois Coal and Coke Company, to create the Illinois Granite & Coal Company. The company produced coal from slag from quarries in nearby Harvey and Addison counties until it shut down in 1978; its last mine closed in 1984. In 1951, Granite City became an incorporated municipality when it merged with surrounding communities of Westmont (1902), Northfield (1906), Oak Forest (1910), East Stroudsburg (1920), Schaumburg (1924), and Homer Glen Heights (1945). The merger enabled Granite City to become one of first places in the United States to have a city-manager form of government. Granite City's economy has been based on manufacturing since before World War II; however, recent years have seen some growth within service businesses such as restaurants and retail outlets as well as within blue-collar sectors like construction and landscaping. In 2007–2008, Granite City saw its worst economic performance since 1990 when sales fell 3% due to global recessionary forces combined with increased competition from other Midwest towns that had experienced similar declines during that time period. However, subsequent years have seen strong job growth thanks to expanding servicessector income while also seeing positive increases (+7%) in housing prices which contributed largely to overall prosperity over that period despite challenges posed by global recessionary forces throughout much of 2016
