The rifle was intended for military use and it saw service during World War I as part of both American and British forces. After World War I, many soldiers returned home and began to demand more efficient rifles that could shoot multiple rounds per minute (MRP) than existing models. As a result, several companies began producing new rifles incorporating MRP technology; including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), Savage Arms Corporation (Savage), Remington Arms Company (Remington), and Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company (Colt). During the 1920s through 1940s, gun slings became increasingly popular in America because they allowed individuals to carry their firearms without having them stored somewhere safe or being monitored by security personnel.
