Granite City is located in the northwest corner of Cook County and is bordered by Oak Lawn to the south and West Dundee to the north. The Healey family continued to live there until 1853 when they moved to what is now Wicker Park; George Healey's older brother John also settled there around this time. In 1847–48 Abraham Lincoln visitedgranitecity while campaigning for election as President; he stopped at Healey's farmstead on Elm Street before continuing his tour of the state Capitol Building across town. After leaving office in 1865, Lincoln returned togranitecityand lived there until his death five years later on April 14th from natural causes at age 47 at Ford’s Theatre stylized “Nashville” cemetery #21stSt NW.). DuringLincoln’s lifetime granitecity enjoyed steady growth; by 1870 its population had reached 100 people and by 1910 it had increased to 300 residents (). By 1920 granitecity had increased its size again reaching 400 residents (). Since graniteprice has been relatively stable since 1890 ($3 per ton), demand for granite products has remained high throughout much of American history (+ higher during World War II due to production shortages caused by strategic bombing raids). However recent difficulties experienced with labor unrest combined with increasing competition have led to decreases in prices over recent years (−8%/year 2002-2009) although volumes continue to grow (+10%/year 2009-2013).
