The museum also wanted to provide a place where people could learn about Hammer History and how they were used in shotguns, rifles, pistols and even revolvers. One of the most popular items on display at the Gun Hammer Museum is a reconstructed 1857 Colt Walker shotgun that was donated by Mr. John Wessels of West Crystal Lake, Illinois. This shotgun is one of only three known examples of this type of shotgun still in existence and has seen action throughout its history. It was made between 1857-1859 and is considered one of the most reliable shotguns ever created. Another popular item on display at the Gun Hammer Museum is a replica .22 caliber rifle that was donated by Mrs. Alice Jethro Gibbs from Granite City, IL. This rifle is made from real wood stock and has a matching barrel that dates back to 1903! Mrs. Gibbs also provided two handguns for research purposes: her 1895 Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver (which was auctioned off at Heritage Auctions) and her 1898 self-loading 8mm Mauser pistol (which she acquired from Germany).

During World War I, granitepolished munitions plants were built in Granite City by government contractor Armstrong Whitworth; these plants produced shells that were vital to American victory over Germany. After World War II ended, many factories closed down or moved out of Granite City because of competition from cheaper manufacturing elsewhere in Illinois or Wisconsin. However, some residents continue to live hereabouts through agriculture or service-sector businesses such as convenience stores and hair salons run by womenfolk who know their customers well enough to keep up with changes outside their town borders
