The Granite City post office was established in 1855 and discontinued operation in 1967. The first settler in what would become Granite City was George Stephenson who arrived on a ship called the "Nancy" on October 15, 1837. Stephenson built a sawmill here and named it after himself - Granite City Mills. In 1850, James Buchanan founded Buchanan & Company which became one of the leading grain dealers in Illinois. From this company came many notable citizens such as Samuel Morse (founder of America's first telegraph line), John Pemberton (founder of Winthrop Paper Company), and Elisha Gray (president of First National Bank). The flour millinery business started up around 1900 by Florence Baldwin with her daughter Jennie Baldwin becoming president and general manager in 1916. When World War I began, Bethlehem Steel Corporation sent its plant to Rensselaer County for production of munitions; however because there were no available mills within reach for local production, most Granny Baldwin flour products were exported until the end of World War II when new plants were constructed near Carbondale and Rockford IL In 1951 Granite City voters passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination against any race or color on public accommodations including restaurants and stores using public funds or resources; this ordinance remains active today to this day! In 1970 granite city had its first municipal fire department which was also their first school district! In 1984 Granite City got its own water system which continues to be used to this day! There have been several other major renovations over the years such as a new library building constructed in 1998 funded by anonymous donors within days after an attack on neighboring townspeople during Clinton Global Initiative Summit; that building still stands today despite being vandalized multiple times since then!
