At that time, catoptics was an early form of photography that relied on lenses made of small prisms or mirrors to project images onto a large screen or mirror. Catlin’s business grew quickly, and he eventually opened a larger store on State Street in 1875. During World War II, Granite City became an important manufacturing center for military optics because of its location at the junction of three major highways. This helped make Granite City one of the most importantbinocular production centers in the world during the war years. In 1954, the company moved to its current location on South Main Street in Granite City after purchasing several acres of land near downtown. The company has remained here ever since!

Granite City is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,651 at the 2010 census. Granite City is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was platted in 1881 and named after granite quarries in England. The first mills were built here by Daniel Drake and others in the early 1800s; they turned out 100 to 150 tons of stone per day. By 1830, more than 50 mills had been constructed within a few miles of Granite City by farmers and entrepreneurs looking for an easy way to get supplies for their businesses and build new homes. In 1836, General William Henry Harrison moved his army from Fort Donelson to camp near Granite City on the southern bank of the West Branch of the White River to wait for winter weather to drive Native Americans from their land. When it came time for him to leave, he ordered his men not to bring any food with them because he knew that would give away their position as invaders. In 1871 Granite City became one of ten towns consolidated into Kane County under the jurisdiction of Sangamon County; it remained an agricultural center until Prohibition caused a decline in demand for stone products during World War I which led to closures of many local mills; then milling recommenced but slowly due primarily to advances in transportation (the first trains journeyed through Kane County only two years after its incorporation). A major event occurred when quarrymen dynamited a dam upstream on orders from Union Army general John Custer so equipment could be taken down needed for construction at nearby Peoria Field on Decatur Creek; this created an uproar among residents who felt they had been unfairly invaded and destroyed their town without just cause – some even rioted while others gathered stones against government forces which arrived soon afterwards with cannons (for fear that violence might erupt). While some members admitted defeat and returned home shortly thereafter, most people did not go back under such circumstances –granites remain firmly planted as one of downtown's defining features today. As manufacturing declined throughout much of the 20th century, Granite City lost its identity as an agricultural center but has regained some prominence since becoming known as "the granitepolitan" due bothto its longstanding presence within Chicago's skyline and because many large companies have made significant investments here including Wacker Chemical Company (now Wacker Group), Motorola Solutions Inc., Honeywell International plc., Continental Resources Inc., Hecht-Lancaster Brewing Co., First Interstate Bancorp., Global Crossing Inc., Schneider Electric Automotive LLC/, American phosphates Corporation/Umbrella Corp./Eagle Rare Minerals Corporation et al.; all based outside Chicago proper although there are occasional exceptions (e.g.: Hecht-Lancaster Brewing) GEOGRAPHY & HISTORY: According to2010 census data, 21%of GraniteCity residents identify themselves as black or African American while 79% identify themselves with some other race or ethnicity
In 1847, the Illinois Territory was established. Granite City became a part of the new territory and was named for the granite rocks that were found in the area. The city's first mayor was John Fremont. The city entered into a friendship with Chicago in 1857, and Granite City became one of the largest cities in Chicago. In 1870, Granite City built its first hospital and started to provide health care to residents. Granite City also began to invest in businesses and create its own industry. In 1916, Graniteness moved out of town as it merged with other towns in the region to form Steel Valley.
