Granite City is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the Chicago metropolitan area after Chicago Heights. Granite City is one of the few large cities in Illinois without representation in the state legislature. The city has a strong industrial base and economy, with several companies such as Motorola Solutions and Caterpillar having their headquarters there. The first Europeans to visit Granite City were French Jesuit missionaries who arrived on October 15, 1774, while traveling south from Kankakee County through what is now neighboring DuPage County. They built a log cabin on the present site of downtown Granite City while they were exploring what would become today's Illinois Country Side. In 1837, James Gage became granitepersonal for Rock Island Railroad and grantee of land comprising much of modern-day Granite City; he named it "Granite City." In 1851 tired of being ignored by other rural towns in Cook County, General Solomon Northrop organized a group of businessmen to form a new political party called the National Republican Party (NRP). Northrop quickly gained support from Granite City citizens by establishing an office near Wabash Avenue and State Street; his office served as the town's polling place for presidential nominations until 1912 when machines replaced men as poll workers. Theodore Roosevelt visited Granite City twice during his first term as President: once on March 14th 1909 during his campaign stop at Soldier Field across from Grant Park; again on April 12th 1910 during his trip upstate to Peoria Junction where he met with farmers and toured some mills before returning home that night via train to New York. Roosevelt was so impressed by Granite City's steel production that he ordered Ulysses S. Grant to name him general manager of all U S Steel Companies - an order which Grant fulfilled two years later when U S Steel went public under Northrop's direction Theodore Roosevelt also spent time visiting Alma Mater University (AMU) located in downtown GraniteCity four times: once on May 5th 1906 while attending commencement exercises; then again on October 3rd 1908 while speaking at an open housesponsored by AMU president John Puddifoot; finally on November 16th 1910 whenAMSU students staged a sit-in protest against high tuition prices at Northwestern University where Roosevelt delivered remarks denouncing capitalism . Granite City is a city in western Illinois, United States. The population was 31,752 at the 2010 census. Granite City is the county seat of Kane County. The city is named after granite rocks that were quarried there. The first permanent settler in Granite City was George Stephenson, who built a log cabin on the east side of the river in 1814. Stephenson and his brother-in-law Daniel Kapp founded the town in 1815 as a trading post between Indiana and Illinois. In 1817, Stephenson erected a stockade around what is now downtown Granite City to protect settlers from Native Americans. In 1824, John Cuthbert built a gristmill on White River near present day University Park to supply granulated limestone for buildings in Indianapolis. By 1830, several other mills had been established in Granite City and it became one of the leading towns in Kane County. In 1840, Samuel Morse arrived with his family from Massachusetts and began developing broadcasts from his home office over Nature's Channel (now Spectrum) using an Amateur Radio Service call sign "Morse Station 2". Morse developed plans for a new town called East Granby but these were never realized because of competition from Indianapolis over land ownership within Kane County. The first store opened in Granite City by Jno Eaker was open November 25th1846 just southwest of current day First National Bank building at Main Street & Prospect Avenue; this store served as the nucleus around which development proceeded throughout most of next decade until consolidation occurred back then into existing banks (First National Banks merger circa 1928). Eaker also started construction onwhat would become Downtown Aurora about 1850 eastern edge of current day Grandview Mall area – land stretching along Second Street between Main & Congress Streets today occupied by Wellmark Drugs corporate headquarters complex dating back to early 1990s before being razed; prior to its demolition efforts various other structures associated with early incarnations of Aurora Civic Center including three original jail cells/enlargements (later demolished), two Masonic temples/lodges first used for rifle range shooting operations during peacetime insurrectionary periods 1865-1868 (& finally converted into retail space circa 1985) all dating back to earliest days following incorporation date 1800s when Chicago Mercantile Exchange moved their downtown office out westward towards Union Depot; well known business districts like Erie Canal District etc., situated proximate thereto during late 19th century when heavy industry shifted from older Milwaukee Area towards rapidly growing downtown Chicago . . . When looking at map below depicting parcels boundaries surrounding old Municipal Limits annexed during 1860 annexation process it can be seen that much later residential neighborhoods developed adjacent more recent industrial areas located within overlay boundaries while still maintaining full control over former municipal limits postal service conveyed through streets running thru them ; such continued Postal service operation despite changing demographics has resulted today in unique public character & settings unique among major metropolises worldwide !!
