Godfrey, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. It was once a thriving community with over 1,000 residents. However, the population has declined significantly in recent years and today there are only around ninety-five people living in the town. Godfrey's history began when it was established as an agricultural village in 1867. The village grew rapidly due to its location on the main transportation artery between Chicago and St. Louis. In 1916, Godfrey became a city and retains that status to this day. Godfrey experienced significant economic decline during the late 1990s and 2000s as a result of increased competition from neighboring towns such as Belleville, Illinois; Urbana-Champaign, Illinois; and Naperville, Illinois. However, since 2010 things have begun to improve for Godfrey with new development projects being announced including a new high school (opened in 2013), an expanded library system (opened in 2016), and plans for another police department (announced in 2017).
Godfrey is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheaton–Northwest Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1854 by General James Wofford and his wife, Eliza Jane Webb Wofford. The first post office was opened in 1855. The name of the town was changed to Godfrey in 1892. In 1906, the first school building was built, and it remained in use until 1978. At that time, a new school building was built and dedicated to the community by Mayor Harry Jansen Jr.. In 1932, General Motors purchased land east of Godfrey for a new factory; this addition to the town increased its population from 350 residents to 1,500 residents over 10 years. GM closed the plant in 1982 and all jobs were lost within 3 years; however, some local businesses continued operation until 1984 due to their location near Route 66. According to the 2010 census, there are now only 6 people living in Godfreytown-Easton combined with 2 people living outside of Wheaton-Northwest Chicago metropolitan area (1 person lives outside of Wheaton-Northwest Chicago metropolitan area). The population has decreased since 2000 due mainly to retirement age changes because many people have left for greener pastures such as California or Florida where job opportunities are more plentiful than here back home on Earth! People seem content with what they have though life does take its toll sometimes

Godfrey is a town in Addison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,044 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Godfrey were the Holland family who arrived about 1810 from Holland in the Netherlands. They raised crops and hunted game on their land until they sold it to fur traders in 1834. In 1836, Godfrey was organized as a village by a group of men led by Isaac Russel. The main purpose of this organization was to provide irrigation water for nearby farms. In 1840, George Whetstone moved his family to Godfrey from Decatur County, Illinois and started a grocery store and later became an Agriculturalist with 3 farms including that of Godfrey which he donated to the town in 1865 when he retired from farming. The first school was built in 1847 by Mrs. Clements and taught reading, writing, arithmetic and geometry before being replaced by a log schoolhouse erected in 1861 which served as the town hall until 1913 when it was replaced by the current building which also contains local government offices and functions as a community center. In 1911, Godfrey had 5 full-time teachers plus one student per grade level with three desks each for instruction; however due to budget cuts during World War I only 2 teachers were retained while all other classes were consolidated into 3rd through 8th grades which made room for new buildings on School Street making it possible for an open air gymnasium (now demolished) as well as new addition(s) such as: A library/cafeteria/laundromat (1916), A music shop/theater (1917), A post office (1938), A large garage used for storing automobiles (1963). With growth came annexation of neighboring towns such as Newton Grove Township starting with: An additional 2 acres annexed in 1945 then annexation of both Unity Township eastward beginning with: An additional 4 acres addedBeginning with: An additional 6 acres added 1976 bringing total area now approaching: What would become today's downtown core including much of what is now known as "Old Town"
Godfrey, Illinois was founded in 1847 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia as a frontier outpost on the west side of the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 1,500. In 1869, Godfrey became the seat of government for the newly formed County of Godfrey. The county developed into a major agricultural center with large plantations and ranches located around Godfrey and its surrounding villages. In 1907, Godfrey incorporated as a city under the name of "Gorham". The city's growth was steady until World War II when it experienced significant development due to military production at Gorham Arsenal. After the war, Gorham declined in popularity and eventually ceased operations in the early 1970s. Today, Gorham is an unincorporated community near Harveyville which has been designated as a census-designated place (CDP).
