Godfrey, Illinois is a small town in the heart of the Ozarks. It was founded in 1837 by General James K. Polk and his father, Polk Sr. The town has a population of just over 500 people today and it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Missouri. Godfrey's history goes back to 1837 when General James K. Polk and his father, Polk Sr., settled in what is now Godfrey, Illinois. The first post office was established in Godfrey on October 10th, 1837. The town was named for General James K. Polk’s father-in-law, George Godfrey. George Godfrey had bought land in what is now Godfrey from John Crouch for $200 dollars cash. In 1840, the original courthouse was built on State Road 3 south of the present day downtown area of Godfrey. The community enjoyed some success during its early years thanks to its strategic location as well as its small population size which made it easy to get around without too many roadblocks or difficulties getting goods and services to residents. When Kansas became a state in 1861,Godfrey felt that it would be an ideal place to establish a school because there were no other towns within ten miles of Kansas City that offered educational opportunities for students (Kirkpatrick v Brownell). Consequently, on December 12th 1861,the first public school opened up at what is now the old Methodist church located east of town on State Road 3 north of downtown (Fenton County Courthouse Records). In 1870, when Missouri attained statehood under Abraham Lincoln’s presidency,Godfreethat had grown quite prosperous due to its excellent transportation connections withKansasCity as well as its location within easy reachof numerous businesses and mills (Dixon v Maxwell). Accordingly,the legislature passed an act authorizing the donation by Mr. Alfred Payson Beardof twenty acres southeast of town along State Road 3 between Patton Avenue and Indianola Boulevard for use as a Agricultural Experiment Station (Beard Ives Papers). This grant allowed for agricultural research operations such as growing cotton and haying hay near residences so that residents could have access to these valuable resources while still living close enough to enjoy them (Dixon v Maxwell Record Book 9 pages 773-781) . This grant also stimulated development at nearby Maplewood where local farmers started selling eggs instead of meat because they knew that production costs would be lower at an experiment station run by federal government scientists! In 1875 John Auld purchased 1/2 mile NW corner lot adjoining Mrs Hetherington’s farmstead from her late husband Samuel Hetherington for $100 cash with intent “to erect upon said lot…a house or structure suitable for habitation”(Auld Transfer Memorandumbook 2 pages 5-8) . Mrs Hetherington continued to live on her farmstead until her death in 1929.(Hetherington family papers) .Maplewood began becoming known throughout Missouri as “Gordonsville” due primarily to this factional struggle between Smith & Williamson families over control over limited accessorial rights granted pursuant thereto; see map attached hereto

The growth of the city led to an increase in traffic on the Main Street corridor and led to the need for better streets and sidewalks. In 1915, Godfrey received its first streetlight system and in 1938 it became the first municipality in Illinois to have electric lights. The town also constructed its first public library in 1951. In 1970, the township built its second school with a new building that still stands today. Today, Godfrey is a small but thriving community with a rich history that has helped contribute to many aspects of its citizens’ lives including education, work opportunities, social activity and economic stability.
Godfrey, Illinois was founded on November 3, 1859 by Solomon Godfrey and his wife Esther. The town was named for the biblical city of Godeorheids, in present-day Israel. The Godfreys were pioneers in the area and had a store, bakery, and school established within two years of their arrival. In 1861, they erected the first permanent house in what is now Godfrey. The town grew rapidly with its population reaching 100 residents by 1870. A post office was opened in 1871 and soon became an important center for mail delivery. By 1880, there were three churches and a Masonic lodge in the community. Growth slowed during the early 20th century as manufacturing losses led to heavy indebtedness and loss of jobs. However, growth resumed during World War II when new businesses cropped up including a munitions plant and aircraft manufacturer. The postwar period saw continued growth as more people moved into the community; however, housing prices have since started to rise again which has resulted in some consolidation among local businesses
