Godfrey, Illinois is a small town in the Kane County area of Illinois. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town is named after Godfrey de la Tour, a French explorer who discovered what is now Kane County in 1770. The first permanent settler in Godfrey was John Kieft, who arrived in 1827. Kieft's family ran a store and ferry business on the River Danube and also built a log cabin which still stands today as part of the old schoolhouse complex. A post office called Godfrey was established in 1836, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1892, General George Armstrong Custer made an appearance at Godfrey's Fourth of July parade and caused a sensation by riding his horse into town on Main Street while wearing only pants (the custom then was for officers to wear full dress uniforms). This event has been cited as one of the earliest examples of public nudity in America. In 1902, when electric lights were introduced to Kane County, they were used to turn on streetlights near the old mill where most of the present-day community had been founded: “One night soon after these new lights had come on," wrote one resident "a group of boys got out from behind their homes with switches and turned off all but one light." In 1814, when General William Hull's army passed through on their way to Fort Donelson in Tennessee, they camped near Godfrey for dinner and purchased some goods from its citizens. In 1825, George Stephenson built the first locomotive engine at Newcastle Works in Nowell Township., east of Godfrey on the tracks of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company (L&N). The engine was christened "Godfrey" after Henry Goodrich, Jr., one of Stephenson's assistants. The L&N continued passenger service until 1969 when it merged with the Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW) to form Amtrak Goddrey had a post office from 1827 until it closed in 1893; it did not receive mail until 1904. A store opened in 1861 that became an important stop for travelers going between Chicago and Decorah via Missouri River Junction. In 1865–1866 there was also a train depot here that served as a stopping point for trains travelling between Decorah and St Louis; this depot was destroyed by fire years later but parts still remain today including a portion of the roof above ground level which has been preserved as part of St Louis Train Museum A large factory complex called "the works" was built here by J P Morgan & Co between 1915-1920s which employed up to 4500 workers sheepherding operations took place nearby from 1923 until 1974 when those activities were shifted away to Grantsville . godfrey il history
