At the turn of the century, Godfrey had a population of about 100 people. The town was founded in 1856 by Nathan Godfrey and his wife Eliza. The first settler in Godfrey was George Riggs. By 1873, there were only six people living in Godfrey. In 1896, the Missouri Pacific Railroad came through Godfrey and began construction on a line to St Louis. The company built a depot and stockyards in what is now the town ofGodfrey. railroad workers used the local powder magazine for storage while they built their tracks. A large millinery store also stood near the depot until it burned down in 1924. The depot and millinery store remain as evidence today of how important Godfrey was during this time period. After World War I, there was an increase in hunting and fishing activity around central Illinois due to increased access to game resources following the war. This led to an increase in demand for shooting earmuffs from hunters and fishermen alike. In 1922, Poultney Ear Muff Company became one of the first companies to sell earmuffs specifically designed for huntsto hunters throughout America. Poultney Ear Muffs continued to be popular until they ceased production in 1974 due to changes within sound technology which made shooting earmuffs less effective than ever before

In 2000, Godfrey was named one of "The Top 10 Small Towns in America" by The Daily Herald. Godfrey is home to many religious institutions including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which has jurisdiction over all but two blocks of the town center; and St. John's Episcopal Church, which serves as the parish church for the entire community. There are also several small businesses and schools within Godfrey's boundaries that help support its residents.

It should be noted that not all reports mention specific earshooters; instead they discuss general safety measures taken during wartime including wearing appropriate clothing/masks/ headsets/sound suppressors etc.. Several studies have shown that listening exposure at high levels can lead to deconditioning or even hearing loss in humans 25 years after exposure however no study has looked at long term effects

Godfrey was founded in 1836 by John Godfrey and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the god of war, or Goadrey for short. The Godries were a Quaker family that lived near the site of the present day city of Chicago. Mr. Godfrey donated land to the town and laid out its first block on March 12th, 1836. The first post office opened in 1838. In 1840, a log cabin was built on what is now Elm Street in Godfrey. A gristmill was built around 1840 and continued to function until it burned down in 1865. A sawmill followed in 1851-1852; however, it also caught on fire and burned down. A bakery was established in 1861 but closed operation two years later due to financial difficulties. A Temperance Hall/Social Club was started in 1870 but did not continue operation after being destroyed by an earthquake seven years later (1875). The first hotel opened up shop called the “Queen’s Inn” back around 1880 which eventually became known as the “Old Forest Hotel” due to its location next to a forest preserve that served as their backdrop during formal events such as dances and picnics. A phone company began operations here back in 1890 so there must have been some activity going on at this point! In 1915, Mrs. George Pritzker organized a local bake sale which raised over $2,000 for her local charity organization which she later renamed Children's Hospital Chicago USA after her father's death when she was just 10 years old! In 1925-1926, another hotel name change occurred with the establishment of “The Brown Palace” becoming known as the current structure we know today thanks to photos from that period! In 1946-1947 an addition consisting of four bedrooms and living room/ kitchenette were constructed across from what is now Centennial Park! Made possible through fundraising campaigns spearheaded by Mayor Richard Jaffe (!), this building would serve as both GODFREY POLICE STATION AND THE CENTENNIAL PARK HOSPITAL until finally being torn down in 1973!!! It has been said that one reason this building failed so miserably is because it had been directly across from CENTENNIAL PARK'S most famous attraction - Wrigley Field - making it easy prey for vandals who often struck without consequence)! This event led many people to suggest that future redevelopments should avoid property close to one of history's most influential ballpark sites!!!
