Godfrey is a small town in the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the central bank of the Galesburg-Montrose River valley. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in what is now Godfrey was French explorer and missionary Jacques Marquette in 1779. He named it after his patron saint, Godehard II of Normandy, who had been martyred there over 150 years earlier. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson founded a military post here called Fort Dearborn which later became known as Godfrey; he named it for General Dearborn's father-in-law, General Simon Cassius Goddard (1759-1836), who had fought for Britain during the Napoleonic Wars and then served as an American general under President James K Polk (1841-1901). In 1861, local Indian leader Tecumseh visited and impressed upon its citizens their need for a church that would "speak louder than thunder" when proclaiming India's independence from Great Britain; they organized themselves into a Congregational Church with Reverend John Hordern as pastor and built one on Main Street in 1871. The cornerstone for this building was laid by Mayor Abram Hewitt on November 20th, 1871; services were preached by Rev Wm Burtch and conducted by Revs Geo Fitch amd Dr Jno Sargent until 1974 when services were moved to First Unitarian Church due to construction within that buildingblocks larger edifice across State Road 59 from downtown Chicagoland commenced opposite then location where today’s First UnitarianChurch stands with beautiful new facilities completed late last year just prior to Hurricane Harvey Irma damage/delay! On September 1st 1890 Mother Theresalua started her conventual prayer house 8 blocks east of our old home adjoining St Joseph’s Schoolhouse also known as Our Lady Of Loretto Convent adjacent to Holy Cross Cemetery & 12 blocks west of current day home site occupying present day property line between Old Mrs Cook Chapel next door & current day home site line between 2 buildings next door Demolition began Septemeber 30 th 1893 followed by Rebuild Octembers 3 rd 1897 althoug h not all members wanted conventual school so mother came back Nov 6 th 1898 finally closing Dec 7th 1899 Dissolved Jan 15 th 1902 . AfterMother Teresa left no successor could be found so chapel closed actually Feb 23rd 1902 operated BY Sisters OF Charity until operation ended July 1976 becoming Our Lady Of Loretto Parish School

Godfrey was a small town in Cook County, Illinois until the early 1900s. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) and it had a population of 9,898 as of the 2000 census. Godfrey was named for George Godfrey, an early settler in the area. Godfrey first appeared on maps in 1812 when French trader Pierre Laclède visited what is now Godfrey. He called it "Bois de la Garde" which means "Wood of the Guard." The name probably came from its strategic location on the border of two other towns: Ottawa and Rockford. In 1827, Abraham Lincoln traveled through Illinois and discovered that there were already three settlements by this name: Bois de la Garde, Ottawa, and Rockford. When he became president in 1829, he endorsed the idea to rename these towns after him because he felt they would be more marketable to Americans if known by one name only. The first post office at Godfrey opened in 1830; it was renamed Wabashville in 1840 due to growing competition from nearby Chicago's Post Office Department. In 1861, voters in Godfrey cast ballots for Ulysses S. Grant during his presidential election campaign; Grant received 68% of the vote here compared to 36% for James Buchanan statewide. Pope Pius IX issued his Apostolic Exhortation "Ecclesiasticus" (1864) located near Godfrey; this document encouraged Catholics throughout America to read scripture frequently and pray for guidance during difficult times such as Reconstruction Period slavery emancipations etc.- allowing many African Americans who had labored under white supremacy before then access to education eventually leading them into self-rule once freed slaves began living among themselves as their own nations did not want them living among them anymore
Godfrey was founded in 1871 by farmers John Godfrey and Isaac Shultz. The town grew rapidly during the early years, and by 1881 it had a population of 350 people. In that year, Godfrey was chartered as an incorporated village. By 1902, the population had grown to 1,500 people and the village became a city in 1913.
