Godfrey, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Godfrey was Moses Hoadley and his family in 1824. The town name was chosen because it coincided with the German god Freiheit (freedom). In 1839, John Prentice built a log cabin on what is now State Street. A post office called Godfrey was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it closed in 1902. Godfrey became an incorporated village in 1851. The first schoolmaster was Wm. Bigham, who taught students from Kinderhook to Plainfield Township School District #1; he also served as President of the Village Board from 1850 to 1862. In 1861, when Union troops invaded McHenry County during the American Civil War, they burned down several homes and stores near Godfrey while arresting some residents for supporting Confederate forces. Afterward, all citizens were required to wear blue uniforms at all times and carry firearms unless accompanied by a friend or relative (or if unarmed). Godfrey had two churches by 1870: one Protestant and one Catholic; both were dedicated to St Cloudthe Apostle—the patron saint of travelers—and both functioned as voting places for local elections that year. In 1889–90 there were nine businesses operating in downtown Godfrey; by 1930 only four remained open including three small grocery stores and one dry goods store which closed due to competition from larger retailers within five miles of town limits . A new courthouse was constructed on Fourth Street between Maple Avenue and State Street around 1912-13 after plans were developed by then-Mayor George Fenton based on designs submitted by architect Jens Jensen . As part of its design features included an interior marble flooring job done under supervision of assistant county attorney general Wiley Hammond ;[5] this building would serve as the legal center for central McHenry County until torn down c1990s after becoming too dilapidated for use again following multiple fire outbreaks . On November 1st 1890 James Murchison married Anna Jane Kuchar (née Rollins) at First Presbyterian Church located off Main Street . Reverend C R Hickey officiated with Rev E F Scott providing communion service afterwards according to marriage license records kept at that time[6]. On December 12th 1890 their son John born at home just east side of Second Street south lot parallel Old US Highway 441 [7][8]
