The name comes from the Irish word "God" meaning "god" and "freya" meaning "day." The original home of the Godfrey family still stands today and is used as a museum. Godfrey is located just south of Carbondale on Illinois Route 56. It lies within McHenry County, between Aurora to the north and Decatur to the south. According to the 2010 census, Godfrey has a total area of , all land. The first settlers in this area were General Godfrey's brother-in-law John Elliott and his wife Anna Mayhew (née Fenton). They moved into this part of Illinois in 1875, after purchasing land from the Kankakee Band of Ottawa Indians. General Godfrey had come to America with his father when he was only six years old. He had married Anna Mayhew while he was living with her parents in Ireland; they would later move back to America and live at Carpentersville until their deaths in 1935.
