Godfrey is a small town in the midwest of Illinois. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and has a population of around 960. The main industry in Godfrey is agriculture, with around 60% of the residents working in farming or ranching. The other main industry is transportation, with a few businesses providing services such as truck stop, airport, and hotel. Godfrey was founded by Methodists in 1857. In 1916, it became part of the Illinois town of Terre Haute, which later merged into Chicago. In 1961, Godfrey became an independent city and retains its Methodist heritage. Today, there are over 100 religious denominations represented in Godfrey – including Seventh-day Adventism, Pentecostalism, Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism, Episcopalians and Baptist churches. There are also a few mosques and temples located within the city limits. The history of Godfrey goes back to 1857 when Methodists first arrived here from Michigan to start a new community called Albion College Settlement on what is now Racine Avenue east of I-94 near downtown Chicago. For many years until 1914 when Terre Haute absorbed it into their larger community (and lost some key historical sites), Godfrey was known as Albion College Settlement after that settlement’s founding date (April 12th). A short distance south along Racine Avenue was Normal School where several prominent Methodist ministers taught for many years before they moved on to become missionaries to various parts of the world (elders such as Willis Osborne who served in China during World War II). When Normal School closed down in 1907 due to budget cuts by then-Mayor John Hynes (the man who had originally proposed creating Terre Haute), students from Albion College Settlement took up teaching there instead until 1915 when Terre Haute absorbed that community too into its larger municipal entity which continued to use Normal School’s name until 1917 when it became simply “TerreHaute” without any reference to either the college or settlement properties which were now just across the river at what is now North High Street). So although both settlements were once contemporaneous entities within their respective cities/townships –TerreHaute absorbing them circa 1861 while still using Normal School’s name & Albion Collegesettlement absorbing it circa 1914 – they would never again be considered part same municipality (& indeed they would only once again come together as one entity under Chicago City Council jurisdiction starting with 1947)despite being adjacent geographically (& socially) & sharing many common resources (& cultures) even thru annexation/merger proceedings thru various local politics over ensuing decades! It wasn’t until about 1960 that things started changing for both settlements as City Council began looking towards developing areas outside their original borders(& especially westward beyond Northwestern Indiana whence much Religious growth occurred thereafter 😉 )& so Holy Cross Seminary lands adjacent thereto along North High Street becoming finally available for purchase by City Councilfollowing lengthy negotiations led by Mayor Edward Byrne after years(?)of failed attempts(?) !!!! So we have this curious borderland situation whereby two separate municipalities share one waterfront site within their boundaries but can never actually touch each other physically despite having economically significant cultural ties viz: Professional Educational Institutions enjoyed by both communities; Agricultural land comprising almost entirety OFeach municipality bordering water; ZIP Code Zip code associated with each municipality makes up most populated portions thereof😇😧

Godfrey remained a small community until after World War II when its population exploded due to various factors including an increase in industry and more people moving into the area from other parts of the country. By 1960, there were only 350 residents remaining in Godfrey while by 2000 it had increased to over 1,500 residents.
Godfrey was founded in 1847 by George Godfrey and his brother, Amos. The first store was built on the current site of the Godfrey Truck stop. The original location of the store is still in use today as a convenience store. The town was named for George Godfrey, who donated land to the town. The first post office was established in 1848 and served until 1865. In 1855, Gottfried Brothers Coal & Coke Company began operations in Godfrey. The company became known for producing high-quality coal products and exporting them to other countries. In 1916, Gottfried Brothers merged with another coal company, Central Coal & Coke Company, which resulted in the towns name becoming Central Coal & Coke Corporation.
