Godfrey was first settled in 1837 by Puritan refugees from Connecticut who had fled religious persecution there. The town was platted in 1845 and named for Godfrey de la Rue, 4th Earl of Huntingdon, who donated land to the town. A local lumber company started up in the early 20th century and still operates today. The community has experienced some growth over time as it became home to a large military base during World War II before becoming largely abandoned and now serves as a bedroom community for the city of Springfield. In recent years, however, development around the schoolhouse and churches has resumed with plans to add new homes onto existing properties. Christians have been present in Godfrey since its earliest days; one of its original pastors was Revs John Hoadley and James Kingsbury Jr.. In 1868, Elijah Parish joined with other Illinois Episcopal parishes to form what is now known as Eastern Christian Ministries (ECM). It was located on the north side of the Kankakee River and had a population of about 2,500 people at its peak. The first post office was established in 1822, and the first store opened in 1827. A school began operation in 1829 and continued until 1903. In 1907, Godfrey became an incorporated village under the name of Godfrey Heights after being donated by its citizens to this purpose by then-Mayor Harry Ladds. In 1915, it changed its name again to Godfrey after becoming an all girl high school known as "Godfrey Girls". In 1947, during World War II, Godfrey became one of two towns (the other being Mayville) which were occupied by American forces as part of Operation Overland. Afterward, many residents returned home and their businesses reopened; however, most remained behind when America withdrew from World War II on August 15th 1945.
