Godfrey is a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois. It is located on the banks of the Kankakee River, about 20 miles northeast of Chicago. The population was 5,792 at the 2000 census. The first European to visit Godfrey was Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it Christianis after his patron saint, and Native American hunters called it "Goudreaux." The village's official name was given to it by John Atherton, an early settler and founder of Godfrey Township. A post office operated here from 1835 until 1903. The community took off when two brothers named George bought land here and started a cotton plantation in 1857. They were followed by their father and other family members, who began cultivating maize, beans, potatoes, cottonseed oil and other crops on some 5 acres (2 hectares). By 1865, they had enhanced their holdings with 1 mile (1 kilometer) of canal leading north to the Kankakee River; 4 miles (6 kilometers) of track leading to a mill; 9 lots for housing; 3 stores; 3 churches; 1 schoolhouse; and 12 headmen—all within easy walking distance of one another. In addition to economy-driven growth that outstripped population growth during most of the 19th century—the men worked off farms for sharecroppers while women brought home goods such as clothing or eggs—George also developed new methods for making products such as soap which became popular in America during that time period In 1886–87 local businessmen formed what is now known as The Illinois Cotton Company and began marketing high-quality cotton throughout Illinois but especially in Missouri through agents there In 1888 they built a mill which processed 50 tons/day (27 metric tons/year) of raw cotton into fabric goods including suits for business men, calico dresses for ladies and shirts for workers That year too they opened up an insurance office providing coverage not only for themselves but also their customers’ families As this company grew so did its production —including moving from 50tons/day (27 metric tons/year) to 350tons/day (175 metric tons/year), then 500tons/day (250 metric tons/year), before finally reaching 1 million pounds per annum around 1912 when machine output surpassed human labor capacity For many years thereafter it dominated world industry The company went public in 1911 underwritten by J P Morgan & Co With annual sales over $2 billion by 1920 it had become one of the largest textile companies ever When World War II erupted many plants were closed down One plant alone produced more than 10 million pieces of cloth each day After 1945 stimulus legislation led to increased competition among U S textile mills But despite numerous challenges industrial consolidation has continued with Today’s Godfrey Mills Incorporated producing over 25 million pounds(220 metric tonnes) per day(of primary product: textiles) This paper will introduce those who are interested in learning more about this fascinating little townhome community located about 20 miles northeast of Chicago

Godfrey was a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It was first established in 1837 as part of the surrounding township of Godfrey. The first post office was established in 1838 and the town name was changed to Godfrey in 1849. In 1890, it became a city. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The community began as a small Methodist settlement on the banks of the Kankakee River near its confluence with the Chicago River. Methodists had been present here since 1795 when they founded what is now known as Godfrey Chapel on land donated by John Godfrey and his brother-in-law Nicholas Wiseman. In 1840, Revd James Hines opened a religious school here which taught young people to read and write English and to think for themselves. In 1865, an act of Congress designated this tract of land lying east of Danville Township as part of Illinois’ “University Territory” for the purpose of providing agricultural research opportunities for young men from all over America; however, no college ever developed from this initial effort. In 1893, after years of petitioning by citizens and others interested in having their wishes realized, Mayor Edward Gifford announced that Godfrey would become a city within five years - making it one of only two US cities to achieve this milestone (the other being New York City). The cornerstone for George Waddell Street Baptist Church - one of downtown's earliest buildings - was laid on September 20th 1896 by then-Mayor Gifford himself! A rich history begins with Reverend James Post who arrived here in 1840 following service preaching along Kankakee Valley Railway lines he had ridden out westward on circuit stops during his honeymoon with his bride Jane: "I came down through these woods about Bloomington ilk & I found myself at Godfrey...It is said that our worship started here back at least 2200 years ago." Not content with just another stop before reaching Chicago proper or any other major center like Lexington or Kentucky where services were being held intermittently given available space thereabouts (unlike today!),Revd James purchased 640 acres adjoining Bloomingdale Cemetery west and north thereof including what is now known as Mrrrs Rd., platted it & named it after himself – GODFREY – duly recorded IN PUBLIC RECORD 3 TIMES A WEEKENDLY! Missourians were among those early pioneers voting & setting up homes @ GODFREY soon AFTER THE CIVIL WAR!" Erected next door to new Mrrrs Rd., home built c1900 stands oldest structure still standing in town today (& most numerous private residence) Among many notable residents then/still living @ GODFREY include: Mrs President Ulysses S Grant Wood Sr…Mrs Grover Cleveland Allen
