Caldwell and named for his friend and business partner George Godfrey, who also built Caldwell's grocery store there. The post office at Godfrey opened on April 1, 1870, and remained open until it closed on December 6, 1969. According to the 2010 census, the racial makeup of Godfrey was 89% White (non-Hispanic), 10% African American (non-Hispanic), 0% Native American/Alaskan Native (non-Hispanic), 3% Asian/Pacific Islander (non- Hispanic), 2% from other races (non-Hispanic). Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9%.

By 1901, there were only six residents remaining in Godfrey; all but one had passed away by then. However, some efforts have been made over recent years to revive interest in the townspeople’s history and culture; these include hosting occasional cultural events and hosting a variety of historical exhibits at local businesses and other locations withinGodfreethat still retain some vestige of local flavor today."
