Godfrey, Illinois was a small town in central Illinois until the late 1800s. It is now part of Peoria, Illinois. The first gun slings were developed in Godfrey during the 1820s by local farmers to protect their crops from Native Americans.
Godfrey is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Godfrey was founded by John Godfrey and his family in 1853. The present day community of Godfrey was platted on March 13th, 1859 by John Godfrey and James Hickey. The first post office was established in that year and named after John Godfrey. The community of Godfrey rapidly grew due to its location near the new Illinois Central Railroad tracks which connected Chicago with other parts of the country. By 1870, the population had reached 3,000 residents and by 1880 it had grown to 5,000 residents. The early successful businesses in the community were cattle drives and general storekeepers who sold goods such as groceries, hardware, livestock and supplies to farmers across Cook County including those in western McHenry County where Godfrey is located. In 1895 a church was built on a lot donated by James Hickey for $2,500 which served as the town's first brick church until 1910 when an aluminum frame church replaced it. That same year a school was also built on a lot donated by James Hickey for $1,600 which became the only high school in town until 1972 when it merged with neighboring Arlington Heights High School to form Arlington Heights-Godfrey High School District No 2 (AGHD 2). In 1916 a two-story addition was added to the original school building providing additional classrooms for students grades 10 through 12 adjacent to what is now known as Mrs. Kapp's Hall which housed our current grade levels from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade until 1982 when AgHD 2 moved into their present building which houses all grades 9 through 12 currently while Mrs. Kapp's Hall continues to serve as ourelementary/middle school gymnasium (grades 7-12). After years of requests from parents there has been continual discussion among our board members about creating an elementary/middle school just north of Mrs. Kapp's Hall called "Godfrey Elementary" but alas no decision has yet been made! As you can see we have many resources including an upper floor library that seats 150+ students along with multiple sports fields including football/soccer practice fields; one court for basketball; Ping Pong tables; 4 playgrounds (3 baseball/softball); 3 gymnastics studios; 1 science lab; 6 laundry machines; 700 square feet water softener room & 800 square feet dryer room - this would amount to over 1200 square feet total surface area! Today much like back thenryou'll find people working either directly or indirectly within local businesses or government agencies giving your average Joe or Jane some degree level connection to both! This village motto remains "Ecclesia Est!" meaning "Church Is Here!"

The village of Godfrey was platted in 1840, and the first post office opened in 1845. In 1865, the name of the town changed to Godfrey-on-the-Hudson after General John Fenton Hudsons famous visit to the area. In 1907, a dam across the River Big Black were built and renamed Lake George after Genl Hudson's visit to that area as well as others around this time.
