When these men died Iredell County Historical Society has located three buildings that serve as evidence that Jabez Godfrey had built a cabin hereabouts on or about March 1st of each year 1798/99 until he sold out to Daniel Boone on October 16th, 1800….It was not until 1830 when Abram Woodruff also settled near what is now known as “Godfrey” that any permanent structures were erected…..In 1867 Gideon French built a blockhouse on what is now Main Street for law enforcement purposes………The first school in “Godfrey” was organized by Reverend Drury Gorman December 3rd 1871 under Chief Justice Isaac Nourse…………..When the village consolidated with neighboring Northfield Township on January 1st 1902, all residents of both towns were automatically transferred to their respective municipalities no matter where they may have lived prior to this date……………As early as 1898 there were reports of people willing to sell land east of present day Highland Avenue for farming purposes……………In 1914 Ziegfeld Studios offered $5,000 for all property within five miles of their studio includinggodfreyschool……In 1941 while serving time at Joliet State Prison Libby Proctor donated fifty acres adjacent to present day Park Ridge Road between Joliet Correctional Facility and US Cellular Arena making possible what would become known as Libbys Farm which still stands today………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….During World War II most male inmates were housed at Joliet State Prison although women prisoners were held at various other correctional facilities throughout Illinois……during the war local businesses made donations towards munitions production….. During its existence only 2% of taxes collected went into general fund while 98% went into special funds such as pensions and social welfare which are used today

Another interesting figure associated with Godfrey is General George Armstrong Custer who fought in World War I here and died in action in 1918. During his time here he also established Camp Cody which still stands today as one of Illinois' most famous military camps and also gave rise to another famous landmark in town – Panasonic Theatre located on Main Street between Second Avenue North and Third Avenue North. One of the more recent arrivals to town has been Barack Obama who made an appearance here while campaigning for president in 2008 before returning home two years later when he became President of America.
